Thanks, everyone, for the support of this story. The picture says it all, and the story is the enthusiasm of Democratic voters and the craziness of the system that makes this necessary.
The NYT’s Charles Blow (resident of Atlanta) has a great column (paywall) out today about exactly this subject inspired by his wait in line to vote.
… as I waited, something else occurred to me: Voter suppression is one of the surest cures for apathy. Nothing makes you value a thing like someone trying to steal it from you.
The line, and all the people patiently waiting in it, is a symbol of resilience and perseverance. It is a reminder that people will work hard to overcome obstacles to accomplish things they deem essential.
I also just wanted to say that I’ve read every comment on the thread. I appreciate the thoughtful discussions of voting, voting rights, and voter suppression this story inspired and the personal stories folks have shared about their voting experience.
