This story from the BBC about a historic rail line in England is worth a read because it shows what we’ve forgotten about what rail can do for a region, and about the huge effort that what was put into building them.
We are at a crossroads in America today. A rail industry focused on nothing but the bottom line is close to having Congress ratify an agreement that would drive workers away from the rails en masse. It’s now up to the Senate to add in the paid sick leave workers need in their struggle to have a decent quality of life.
This story from England brings home the point that there’s a larger public interest for everyone. Left to Wall Street, the industry is close to having all the value extracted out of it. We need to do better — for everyone.
Enjoy!
