John Bolton, former national security adviser to ex-President Donald Trump, slammed comments made by his former boss recently that call for the termination of the Constitution. These comments inspired Bolton to threaten to launch his own presidential run in 2024. And now it’s official: The clowns are lining up early.
In an appearance Monday on NBC News’ Meet the Press Now, Bolton said Trump’s recent Truth Social post was “disqualifying.”
“A president, when he’s sworn into office, takes a Constitutional oath and says in part, ‘I will to the best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution.’ Donald Trump has just said he won’t do that. That is disqualifying, and Republican leaders have to say that,” Bolton said.

Bolton went on to say that any Republican candidate who runs for president in 2024 needs to repudiate Trump’s comments. And if they don’t, “there’s one thing that would get me to get into the presidential race, which I’ve looked at at prior elections, it would be to make it clear to the people of this country that Donald Trump is unacceptable as the Republican nominee.”
When pushed about whether Bolton would actually enter the 2024 race, he answered, “Absolutely.”
“I think to be a presidential candidate, you can’t simply say, ‘I support the Constitution,’ you have to say, ‘I would oppose people who would undercut it,’” Bolton said, adding that to say what Trump said is “un-American.”
Bolton added that in order for him not to run, he would need to see “Shermanesque statements from all the potential candidates … If I don’t see that, I’m going to seriously consider getting in,” and he doubled down by tweeting this segment of his interview.
Campaign Action
Let’s talk about who is also un-American (and equally vile): John Bolton.
First off, Bolton was a devout supporter of the Vietnam War but someone who refused actually to fight in it himself.
Under the late former President Ronald Reagan, Bolton fought relentlessly to remove regulations on marketing baby formula in nations without clean water. And under former President George W. Bush, Bolton lied about Cuba having a biological weapons program.
In a 2015 op-ed for The New York Times, Bolton suggested the U.S. should “Bomb Iran!” And let’s not forget Bolton’s call for a war with North Korea—by, in essence, destroying the Constitution.
Bolton resigned from Trump’s Cabinet in 2019 and went on to write a memoir that primarily focused on the former president.
Bolton said of the former president: “He second-guessed people’s motives, saw conspiracies behind rocks, and remained stunningly uninformed on how to run the White House, let alone the huge federal government.”
When asked about his platform if he were to run, Bolton said simply, “Trump’s a whiner; he’s negative; he’s the ‘most-persecuted American out there.’ This is a 180-degree opposite of Ronald Regan.”
Bolton added that he would be a Reagan-styled candidate and would be announcing his run sooner rather than later.
