It’s been months since I last photographed Sandhill Cranes around my area (Quincy, CA), back in August 2021. It wasn’t the very last time I saw them, but those later sightings in the year (and some not-sightings, only hearing them) were at such distance that photos weren’t practical. Today I saw these two on a creek a couple of miles away from my house while out on a bicycle bird-spotting ride.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

Here’s another close-up:
According to this range map from All About Birds, for my part of California (Plumas County) it’s most likely that the Sandhills I see spend a part of their winter down in the Sacramento Valley area, not at all very far from Quincy, and as the winter wanes they begin their trek north. From observations and photo recordings, I’d say some of them just come here and stay awhile.
Here’s a chronological photo sequence. All these photos were taken within a mile from my house.
Mighty nice to see them here again, and I expect I’ll have many more opportunities in the months to come.

What have you noted happening in your area or travels? As usual post your observations as well as their general location in the comments.
Thank you.
