Welcome again to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour. Today I'm sharing something I just recently learned about, although others here may already know.
Lots of saints are depicted with weapons. Often it's the weapon that was used to make them martyrs. Offhand I can only recall a few Christian saints who are commonly shown holding a weapon in the act of actually using it. There's St Michael the archangel with his sword, held threateningly over a vanquished Satan. And St George skewering the dragon with a lance. There's St Joan of Arc, wielding her sword against invaders. I don't recall any others. But here we have something new. A patron saint of the Ukrainian resistance. And she's called St Javelin.
The stickers of the image are the brainchild of a Canadian journalist named Christian Borys, who originally just wanted them for himself. Now they are being sold (along with other products) as a fundraiser for Ukraine. St Javelin is apparently based on the well-known St Mary Magdalene. She's depicted in the style of Eastern Orthodox icon paintings. And she's holding the US made anti-tank missile launcher called the Javelin.
The image is available on stickers along with other items being sold as a fundraiser for Ukraine. www.saintjavelin.com
