Former Vice President Mike Pence, who likely spent more time wiping Donald Trump’s bottom than his own over the past half-decade, is now persona non grata in TrumpWorld, thanks to his brazen attempt to install Joe Biden as president simply because he’d won the election.
One definition of chutzpah could be “almost getting a guy killed with your irresponsible lies and then trying to make him a pariah because he somehow wasn’t ‘loyal’ enough.” And as we all know, Trump has been angry with Pence ever since the former Indiana governor refused to go along with his plan to literally end American democracy by simply pretending he’d won an election he lost by more than 7 million votes.
This minor act of rebellion against his supreme ocher overlord has earned Pence a permanent exile from MAGA-land, which we pretty much already knew. But Trump just removed all doubt: Mike Pence will not be on the presidential ticket if the hell mouth opens and Trump somehow wins the 2024 Republican nomination.
NBC News:
In an interview with The Washington Examiner on Tuesday, Trump said: "I don’t think the people would accept" Pence as his running mate on a prospective 2024 ticket. Trump would first need to secure the Republican nomination, of course, before formally selecting a running mate.
"Mike and I had a great relationship except for the very important factor that took place at the end. We had a very good relationship," Trump said. "I haven’t spoken to him in a long time."
“The very important factor that took place at the end.” Hmm, what might that be? Perhaps that January day when Trump’s supporters, overcome with bloodlust over their fake hero’s bleating about stolen elections, chanted their intention to murder Pence, at which point Trump directed even more dishonest attacks at his loyal lapdog? Because if I’d done that to my friend, I’d be too ashamed to campaign with him, too.
But we know that’s not where Trump’s head is at. Trump’s head is only ever in one of two places—either in its own egomaniacal fantasy world, or hopelessly wedged inside a holiday tin of Fiddle Faddle. No, Trump’s not 86ing Pence because of any shame over what he did to his veep. Rather, Trump somehow thinks he’s the aggrieved party, because that’s simply how Trumps think. Donny wanted his faithful purse poodle to unilaterally send slates of electors back to the states on Jan. 6. Pence didn’t do it, because it would have been illegal. But as we all know, the law only enrages Dear Leader. As does any pushback from people he views as inferior (i.e., everyone on the planet not named Donald Trump or Vladimir Putin).
So when Pence plainly said last month at a Federalist Society event that “Trump is wrong” in claiming that Pence had the power to overturn the election, it must have set the big guy’s adobe gonads aflame.
Those remarks prompted Trump to say Pence considered himself "an automatic conveyor belt for the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to get Biden elected President as quickly as possible."
But Biden had already been elected. The American people saw to that. Old Crow Mitch McConnell, of course, has done everything in his power to undermine Democratic presidents over the past two decades—including by stealing Supreme Court seats and ensuring that President Barack Obama got as little done as possible, even in the face of a crushing recession that began on a GOP president’s watch. But one thing McConnell wouldn’t do is undermine faith in a free and fair American election.
I suppose we should give McConnell a little credit for that, but that would be like giving a chef credit for not spitting in your food. In other words, upholding democracy is a pretty basic part of a U.S. lawmaker’s job description. Which makes it all the more embarrassing how easy it was for so many Republicans to shirk that duty.
If I weren’t laughing so hard at this, I might feel a little sorry for Pence. He probably thought Trump’s Big Mac-sodden heart would explode like a watermelon at a Gallagher show at some point in Year One and he’d get to be president without actually being elected president. Now his chance of winning the presidency is vanishingly small—because he did the right thing that one time.
It made comedian Sarah Silverman say, “THIS IS FUCKING BRILLIANT,” and prompted author Stephen King to shout “Pulitzer Prize!!!” (on Twitter, that is). What is it?
