Tonight I will be attending one of the final few Islanders home games of the season. It was a disappointing season to say the least. As one of the first teams to be hit by the Omicron wave, the NHL decided to allow us to keep playing even with more than half of our starting line up being in Covid protocol or injured. For over a week, every day a new player or two tested positive with a couple testing positive on the road and thus stuck in that city until testing negative twice. Needless to say we lost every one of those 7 games before the League finally shut the team down. Granted, we weren’t great against teams in playoff position for most of the season, but a massive Covid wave moving throughout the team affected us even after symptomatic players were cleared to begin playing again. As many of us know, Covid is not like a cold or the flu. Most people do not bounce back to 100% right after symptoms subside even those vaccinated.
Due to the general manager’s rule, the entire team was vaccinated by the start of the season, but it is unknown whether players were required to get the first booster shot. Hopefully they chose to or will at the end of the season.
The team’s play rebounded a little starting in February so it is possible to see a return to form next year. The biggest problem is the team will be a year older and likely slower. They need an infusion of young, high-skilled talent upfront and on defense. Will we get it? I have my doubts.
Good luck to all the teams in the playoffs except the Laffs and Rags. I hope they lose quickly.
