Tonight’s selections from Radon’s second album, Metric Buttloads of Rock!. Equal parts Jawbreaker and The Replacements, these Gainesville boys serve up a heaping helping of raucous sing-a-long rock ’n’ roll.

Before and after Hot Water Music, there were and are Radon, debatably the greatest Gainesville, Florida, punk band, but certainly the only one who conquered the poles of the idiotic and the profound. In Radon’s 17 years spent defining tough, infectious drunk-punk, this is only their second proper full-length-and despite the title Metric Buttloads Of Rock!, it ain’t all goof. The album has punk poetry in "Rehab Barbie," a song about someone so fucked up she’s "gotta lie to tell the truth," and the bittersweet hard-pop blur "Minneapolis," a tribute to the major influences in Radon’s DNA: Hüsker Dü and the Replacements. But over on the other end, there’s "King Of The Sh1tlist," a riff on domestic squabbling played like a parody of Southern-rock, and "Four Inches Of Heaven," exploring the redeeming aspects of owning a four-inch penis. While plenty of bands have followed Radon’s prototype-the best of them being Gainesville’s Grabass Charlestons and Milwaukee’s Modern Machines-Metric Buttloads Of Rock! proves that Radon know best what sincerity and stupidity are all about. — Alternative Press

King of the Sh1tlist [2006]

Radon certainly sound like theyre from Gainesville, possessing the right mix of melody, insight, humor and production credits, courtesy of Rob McGregor. But where many of their local peers sound like they’ve been drinking a shot of moonshine every hour on the hour since age nine, both vocalists in Radon have that clean, imperfect vocal style that sounds just unsure enough to make every note they produce sound as vital as the last. They’re not drunk enough to be cool, but theyre drunk enough to sing with the kind of emotional abandon that makes punk what it is. With “Write Back Or Get Smacked”, the band deftly walk a line of sarcasm and realism, singing about back porches and e-mail over a fierce, driving backing that recalls Zen Arcade while promoting a Milo Goes To College melodic approach. “King Of The Sh1tlist” approaches jangle-y alt-country with the same kind of punk raised abandon as Against Me!, while tracks like “Re-Animator” and “Control Room” slow things down for some inspired stabs at late-era Jawbreaker. Along with rock, Radon have proven with this full-length that they can produce a butt load of earnestness as well. — Exclaim!
