Between the midterm elections, an extraordinarily busy post-election session, and the nonsense that was that week-long House speaker vote—Republicans are so embarrassing—we haven't had much time to catch a breath, much less recognize Democrats’ incredible accomplishments during the 117th congressional session.
Democrats marshaled our thin majority to pass consequential legislation in the midst of multiple overlapping crises. (I mean, good heavens, this country went through it in 2021-2022.)
From securing the largest investment in the fight against climate change in U.S. history to expanding veterans' health care, Democrats scored major legislative wins that are already helping millions of Americans. Sign the petition to thank them for delivering big for our families, communities, and country.
As someone who watches Congress closely, I sometimes find myself focused on all the parts that frustrate me: the vulnerable people who aren't getting enough, the wannabe oligarchs and bad actors who are getting too much, the outdated customs that uphold white supremacy, Kyrsten Sinema, and all of the ways Congress just doesn't make any sense.
There is, of course, more that we could’ve done, and that I believe we should have done. However, that doesn't erase or diminish the incredible gains Democrats made in just two short years.
Just look at this incomplete list of our accomplishments from the last congressional session:
-
Passing the American Rescue Plan, which included billions for vaccines, local governments, a temporarily increased Child Tax Credit, and more.
-
Establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
-
Successfully investigating and exposing the intention and actors behind the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on our nation, as well as explaining the ongoing threat to the American public.
-
Passing a sweeping infrastructure bill that made the biggest investment in a generation in modern roads, bridges, transit, ports and airports, and more.
-
Confirming Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman and public defender to ever serve on the nation’s highest court.
-
Passing gun violence prevention legislation that strengthened requirements for young buyers and red flag laws.
-
Passing the CHIPS and Science Act to expand the semiconductor manufacturing industry.
-
Securing the largest health care and benefit expansion in the history of Veterans Affairs’ with the Honoring Our PACT Act.
-
Approving the Inflation Reduction Act to bring down costs for working families, drive down prescription drug prices, and take on climate chaos.
-
Protecting marriage equality with the Respect for Marriage Act.
Again: This isn't even everything! There's no denying that Democrats secured enormous wins for the American people.
There is still more to do. With Republicans taking control of the House, we enter a new era of split control, which promises to make legislating more challenging and ridiculous. We'll need Democrats to keep fighting tooth and nail for our communities and our future. For now, let's celebrate all we accomplished in 2021-2022.
