I am sure everyone has heard the old Shibboleth “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” it is used as a shield to prevent any discussion of the meaning intent or danger associated with the second amendment and a highly armed citizenry. You will also hear right wing talking heads tell you that cars kill more people than guns (they don’t) and we do not try to ban cars (we do).
What we do with cars is we regulate them and the operator, I may not drive certain vehicles on the road because they are not safe, I may not drink and drive because I am not safe. Through regulation and enforcement we have gradually made cars safer (to a point) and adjusted the habits of drivers (or removed the “Driving Privileges”. Indeed it might be possible to say cars don’t kill people drivers kill people.
So I have a suggestion let’s not regulate guns (they don’t kill anyone) lets regulate people. Before you can buy a firearm you need a license I am regulating the owner not the gun, we do that with cars and dogs….. To own the gun the owner must carry liability insurance we do that with cars again I am not regulating the gun I am regulating the person. Anyone found in possession of a gun without a license is subject to felony prosecution, anyone found drunk with a gun is subject to felony prosecution and if you beat your wife or threaten you neighbors you loos your license.
At no point am I regulating or legislating guns I am regulating people.
Oh and a 500 percent tax on ammunition…….
Just a thought
