I have no idea what SCOTUS was thinking by handing Trump a national platform to tell voters he can kill them. But the immunity argument is the single worst self-own I’ve seen a politician do this cycle (other than every single thing that DeSantis did).
Trump’s lawyers may love this news but his campaign team does NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN AT ALL, in fact it would have been better for him if he’d just been convicted of a felony and just get it off the headlines. No matter what they say now, the fact is that around zero Trump voters will defect from him even if he’s convicted of a felony. Moderates will just hear it as partisan noise and Dems will just be disappointed by the sentence. And that’s assuming the jury doesn’t acquit him on technical grounds, which is entirely possible.
But this? There’s no spinning this one, he’s the one saying it. And almost everyone hates it too. It puts his party on the defensive, terrorizes moderates and galvanizes Democratic turnout.
Not sure what their motivation is here, but I’m not particularly upset by the news and hope it’s not messing up your day either.
