Editor and Publisher has an absolutely must-read story about Joe Galloway, "the fabled war correspondent" for Knight Ridder, getting into a serious email face-off with Larry DiRita, Rummy's spokesman.
Galloway wrote a column April 26 profiling a retired general named Paul Van Riper. Van Riper said, "Mr. Rumsfeld has failed 360 degrees in the job. He is incompetent. ... Any military man who made the mistakes he has made, tactically and strategically, would be relieved on the spot."
This led to Galloway and DiRita getting into a lengthy, testy exchange, which I won't reproduce here - read the story. But it ends with this comment from Galloway:
someone once asked me if i had learned anything from going to war so many times. my reply: yes, i learned how to cry.
