The Community Reinvestment Association of North Carolina, run by a great guy and professional acquaintance of mine, has been producing a telenovella called "Nuestro Barrio" ("Our Neighborhood"), designed not only to entertain but to educate new Hispanic immigrants on financial literacy, to help them avoid predatory mortgages, check cashers, etc. etc.
There's a good story here.
You'd think this could be nothing but good, right? Well, critics are proclaiming that this valuable educational tool is "also a symbol of the rise of a second American mainstream that threatens to destroy the traditional assimilation of immigrants into America" and that it "undermines the need to halt the flow of illegal immigrants and does not address the social costs."
The CSM story has a poll. At this point, "Threatens to destroy the traditional assimilation of immigrants into American culture" is winning with 55.5 percent of the vote. "Will foster connections between recent immigrants and the rest of society" is losing. You know what to do.
I know the people at CRA*NC, and what they are doing is helping immigrants avoid bad decisions - it's as simple as that.
