Department of Homeland Security Appoints Claria's D. Reed Freeman to Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee
Sound harmless, and business as usual, right? "Claria" who, never heard of them. How about "Gator", does that name ring a bell? Not the football team, the adware program that comes bundled with applications such as Kazaa, etc...

Claria's Chief Privacy Officer and Former FTC Attorney Tapped for Four-Year Term
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 24 PRNewswire -- Claria(SM) (www.claria.com), a pioneer and leader in the behavioral marketing space, today announced that the company's Chief Privacy Officer and Vice President of Regulatory and Legislative Affairs, D. Reed Freeman, Jr., has been appointed to a four-year term on the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) new Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee (www.dhs.gov/privacy).
Currently consisting of 20 members, the committee's primary objective is to advise the Secretary and the Chief Privacy Officer of Department of Homeland Security on issues that affect privacy of personally identifiable information of citizens and guests of the United States in DHS programs. As an appointed member, Freeman will leverage his privacy expertise to advise the DHS Secretary and Chief Privacy Officer on programmatic, policy, operations and technological issues that affect the department's privacy, data integrity and data interoperability programs.
"This Committee will provide the Department with important recommendations on how to further the Department's mission while protecting the privacy of personally identifiable information of citizens and visitors of the United States," said Nuala O'Connor Kelly, Chief Privacy Officer of the DHS. "The diversity of experience and perspectives represented by this committee will play an important role in advancing the national discourse on privacy and homeland security."
"I am pleased to see that the Department of Homeland Security is demonstrating its commitment to protecting the individual privacy of its citizens," Freeman said. "It is an honor to be appointed to this committee, and I look forward to working closely with this diverse group of experts as we strive to address key privacy issues."
As Claria's Chief Privacy Officer and Vice President of Regulatory and Legislative Affairs, Freeman has successfully led Claria's consumer privacy protection and government affairs efforts. Having previously served in notable positions including partner in Washington, D.C. law firm Collier Shannon Scott, PLLC and as the Staff Attorney in the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection, Freeman is widely recognized as an online privacy, advertising and direct marketing law expert.
Talk about a fox guarding the henhouse. Freeman certainly has experience in these matters, but I don't know if I like the idea of adware people creating policy for themselves. Perhaps the next move would be to hire pedofiles as consultants to determine what is child molestation and what isn't, they're experts on the field just the same.
