Just saw the banner a few minutes ago on the web site www.cyberpresse.ca which is in French only. It says:
17h53 É.U.: victoire de Chavez non reconnue
which means:
United States: Chavez victory not recognized
I have no more information on this at the present time. It's too soon for anything to show up in google.
You have to give it to the right wingers: if they had won, they would have said that the referendum was fair, but losing, that's another matter. How can anyone believe that a president who is intent on spending oil revenue on poor people could lose such a referendum? It would only be possible if the only people allowed to vote were from the upper class.
It leads one to believe that the opposition's intention was never to concede defeat in this referendum, but to stir things up, perhaps as a pretext for a foreign intervention.
The U.S. seems to be playing along, despite Jimmy Carter's presence during the voting.
