As I have mentioned in my other diaries, I often explain why I am Democrat in short conversations with peers, colleagues, family, etc. One of the main reasons I am a Democrat is because I believe there are two kinds of taxpayers in the US, people who work for their money, and people whose money works for them. If you work for your money, you should be a Dem, if your money works for you, then you should still be a Dem... but I guess I can understand why you think your a Republican.
People who work for their money pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than people whose money works for them. And not just a small percentage more, sometimes it can be twice as much or even higher! Let's take Mitt Romney for example, the last time he released a tax return in 2011 he paid just 14.1% in taxes on $13.69 million in income. (He could have paid just 10.55% that year!) By contrast, if you work for your money, you start paying 15% in federal income taxes at $37,450 and that jumps to 25% after $90,750. People earning hundreds of thousands or millions a year are paying 39.6% for the vast majority of their income; much, much more than an investor also earning millions a year. This is why Warren Buffett is able to say that his secretary pays a higher effective tax rate than he does.
As long as you EARN your money, your pretty much paying more in taxes than people whose money does the EARNING for them. This basically applies to people who earn wages, and as Mitt's accountants admitted "none of his income was from wages". As long as your money works for you and you are living off your investments, then your money is more "important" than mine.
Bottom line: if you work for your money, then voting for republicans is not in your interest. And don't give me any of that BS about 47% of people not paying taxes, or all the people on welfare "living it up on your taxes", that is not true. Most people who are on any kind of government assistance work, and living on assistance is no picnic, it is hard ass work sometimes. Besides, 47% might not owe federal income taxes, but they are still paying to the state and localities, at the store, the pump, the DMV, and so on. They are probably paying a effective tax rate somewhat similar to most billionaries!
