Calling Californians: Budget Crisis Impacts

California has had so many budget problems over the past few years that many of us have become desensitized to the magnitude of the problem our state faces. Hopefully, this will remind us of the scale of problem we’re looking at:

In as few as nine days, nearly $5 billion worth of public works projects in California, including schools, roads and bridges, could be halted or indefinitely delayed - leading to the loss of thousands of jobs - unless lawmakers fix the state's massive budget mess, state Treasurer Bill Lockyer said Monday.

With so much hope for a national infrastructure stimulus, it’s even more shocking to see the Golden State in danger of moving the other way. We need a large investment in our infrastructure more desperately than ever and yet the politics of passing a budget through Sacramento threatens to hold up much needed projects and kick the Californian economy while it’s down.

Well, the stimulus package has gone the same direction as all other things Bush related. It's now just a few high ranking officials giving money to however they feel should have it with no concern for discertion or fallout. As granny doc points out, congress is shocked, shocked!, to learn that the Bush Administration would try and squeeze in one more gigantic fuck-up before they left office.

Remeber when there was no time to think about what we were doing? Remember when Henry Paulson said, "be scared!" and congress said, "how scared?" Well it seems that some people took the time to think through what they were doing.

Over the weekend, I did two things that I’m very happy about: I voted, and I canvassed for Charlie Brown in CA-04. I wasn’t going to write about my experiences talking to people in Roseville until I saw an article in the LA Times this morning which made me think I should.

From the Times:

Farther north, Democrats are hoping to capture a district that stretches from suburban Sacramento to the Oregon border. John T. Doolittle (R-Roseville), who is enmeshed in a federal corruption investigation, is stepping down after 18 years.

With the district's lines drawn to ensure GOP control, Republicans hold a registration advantage over Democrats, 47% to 31%.

We need more and better Democrats in office, this we all know. But what does better really mean? To me, it means having Democrats in office who will not buckle under pressure, who will always fight for progressive principles, and who will show judgment worthy of their office on all issues.

Vallejo, CA, is in the process of going bankrupt. This is horrifying for a variety of reasons, but mostly because the city is less and less able to provide basic government services, like law enforcement:

Vallejo, already in an economic tailspin, has lost about 20 percent of its police force since the city began its slide into bankruptcy.

About 25 of its 150 or so sworn officers have retired or left for other cities, afraid their pensions or salaries may be slashed if a federal bankruptcy court allows the city to void its union contracts.

"It's a tragic loss for this city," said Vallejo police Lt. Don Hendershot. "We've lost a lot of dedicated, experienced officers. It's very sad seeing these guys go, but I understand why they're leaving."

A little while back, I wrote about the rise of metal theft as indicative of the faltering economy. News about the economy has been slowing down, but this is another sign of the time: an dramatic increase in animals being given to shelters.

One of the continual and worsening trends I notice in my daily scans of five major California newspapers is metal theft. Thieves have been stealing metal and selling it for scrap since forever, but the frequency, ambitiousness and intelligence of the crimes seems to be increasing.

This weekend is a weekend of action and I'll be doing three things: I'll be heading up to Roseville to volunteer for Charlie Brown for Congress on Saturday, donating (of course), and contacting all the undecided California Superdelegates. While I strongly encourage you to participate in those two, I'd like to talk about the third in particular.

Reading the Sacramento Bee this morning, I came across an editorial entitled "Real lesson of Iraq: Pre-emptive war is bad idea" I was surprised to hear that frank of a statement about the the Bush Doctrine in a major American newspaper, and in a headline no less.

Finally, the media is held accountable for their lax standards and willingness to accept the most sensational version of any given story. Not only that, but they issued an apology! It seems that the LA Times has issued a major apology for writing a poorly fact checked article about... the death of Tupac.
