With a bit of procedural maneuvering, the House has passed S. 3307, the Child Nutrition bill, by a vote of 264 - 157. 4 Democrats voted against, and 17 Republicans voted in favor.
As discussed yesterday, House Republicans held up passage of the bill by offering a motion to recommit to require background checks for child care workers. While this amendment would not be controversial, adopting it would send the bill back to the Senate, where it would meet the Republican legislative blockade and probably die.
Democrats struck back by offering the background check provision as a separate bill (H.R. 6469), which passed 416-3. They then defeated the motion to recommit 200 - 221 to reach a clean vote on the bill.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 now goes to President Obama for his signature.
