I'd like to move beyond the blue dog/progressive infighting argument in assessing what went wrong over the last two years, and whether we have the power to remedy it. We clearly shouldn't be arguing in favor of a less-diverse party if we want to win big majorities. This election was lost because we lost the propaganda war.

The populist anger created by right-wing propaganda outlets against every single policy that helps the middle class has made it nearly impossible to govern this country in a way that helps people without paying dearly at the polls. And Republicans were able to tap into this anger and turn the side-effects of their own government mismanagement (the debt) into the cause of our economic problems. The debt is not causing our economic problems. It was specifically caused by: 1) unfunded wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, 2) the unfunded Bush tax cuts, 3) the unfunded Medicare part D, 4) the economic crash from the housing/banking bubble, and 5) the stimulus. The first three of those factors were purposefully unfunded by Republicans. The fourth was a byproduct of deregulated markets. The fifth was tax cuts for the middle class, COBRA, and unemployment benefits, and state aid meant to remedy #4.

Knowing when to stand your ground vs. compromise is the key to getting a lot of stuff done in politics. And in the past 72 hours, I've wavered between "progressives need to flex their muscle and show that we can compromise, but we won't be compromised," as Keith Olbermann put it, and "we really need to cash in our chips while we can."

The fact is, passing this bill is money in the bank. It's political mojo for the Democratic party. It provides a massive amount of subsidies for the poor, the working poor, and the middle-class to help them afford coverage.

It absolutely does not preclude Congress or the Democratic Party taking up the public option issue in the future. So while I think it's great that progressives are flexing their muscle right now and saying, "enough is enough," we need to remember to keep this fight a family fight, and stick together when it's over. And we shouldn't be letting Rupert Murdoch-owned blogs fuel the fire that temporarily divides us.

The Alaska Report is reporting that the Palins are getting divorced due to affairs on both sides.

AlaskaReport has learned this morning that Todd Palin and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin are to divorce. Multiple sources in Wasilla and Anchorage have confirmed the news.

A National Enquirer story exposing previous affairs on both sides led to a deterioration of their marriage and the stress from that led to Palin's resignation as governor of Alaska.

The Palins were noticeably not speaking to each other at last Sunday's resignation speech in Fairbanks. Sarah ditched Todd (MSNBC) right after the speech and left without him. Sarah removed her wedding ring a couple of weeks ago.

I'm not sure about the credibility of this source. Can anyone fill me in?

Dianne Feinstein, as documented in this diary by askew, says that Democrats don't "h[ave] the votes right now" for a government option. How convenient of her to notify us that the officials we have elected to represent us don't have the testicular fortitude to do their jobs. Well, we can change that. In fact, it's our job to change that.

Below the fold is a list of Democratic Senators up for reelection in 2010, and their phone numbers. If they prove themselves unfit for the job we elected them to perform, it's our duty to replace them with people that can get them the votes.

Many people credit Barry Goldwater with starting the conservative movement in this country in the 1960's. But the movement he started was ideological. The current "conservative" movement is also ideological at times, but what really binds them all together is their embrace of authoritarianism. Goldwater's ideological movement was co-opted by a bunch of bullies that never got over their childhood feelings of wimpyness, which gave us what we have today: a movement that is, at its core, based less on actual policy or even politics, and based more on authoritarian mentality and psychology. It appeals to people who want to feel macho and powerful for various psychological reasons under the guise of a philosophical movement. It appeals to people who both like to dole out and respond to a strict sense of authority. This is why the Iraq war, which was the complete opposite of conservatism, was supported by so many "conservatives." It had nothing to do with conservative values and principles -- and everything to do with trying to feel powerful and authoritative after our nation was attacked.

Sarah Palin, grasping for any sort of idea that she has accomplished something worthwhile during her first 20 months of full-time governance, touted her opposition to the "Bridge to Nowhere" in her first appearance on the national stage a few days ago.

Palin noted:

"I championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. In fact, I told Congress ... 'thanks, but no thanks' on that bridge to nowhere. If our state wanted a bridge, I said we'd build it ourselves."

However, this has been exposed as a lie, and Alaskans are pissed.

The problem with Democrats' attacks on John McCain so far is that they don't dig deep into the consciousness of the American voter. They are rational yet superficial attacks that do not penetrate the believability threshold of most voters. This election so far has been a rerun of previous failed Democratic campaigns in which they assume voters are both fully informed and rational actors when they respond to political rhetoric. This couldn't be farther from the truth, especially when it comes to swing voters. Both assumptions have led to countless failures on the part of the Democratic party to frame their own candidate in a positive light and exploit their opponent's weaknesses. Democrats -- stuck up in their ivory tower yet again -- fail to understand the psychology of the non-partisan swing voter and moderate voters from each party. They fail to understand how the mind and the consciousness perceives, interprets and analyzes information. The way they frame their arguments are flat, flaccid and boring. It doesn't pull at the heartstrings, it doesn't sound believable, and it doesn't grab those unconscious psychological levers in the brain like the Republican message does.

Democrats are constantly lagging behind in defining the issues in a light that benefits them. They constantly let the "liberal tax raiser" theme go on unchallenged, and they fight back with wordy, hard to comprehend platitudes and arguments.

It's time to fight back HARD. John McCain is a tax raiser for the middle class! Compared to Barack Obama, McCain will raise your taxes!!

Editor & Publisher brings up an important point about John McCain's callous adultery, and whether his political career was over after that. If John McCain can survive politically after committing multiple acts of adultery, why should John Edwards' affair be treated differently?

I don't condone the actions of either John in this case. I feel bad for their families and what they have already gone through. But McCain should be held to the same standard as Edwards.

Steve Chapman, the generally conservative Chicago Tribune columnist observed today, "Not that Republicans would be able to make full use of this exposure had Edwards been the nominee. Their prospective nominee, after all, was guilty of the same sin during his first marriage.

"But that was 30 years ago. Good news for Edwards: Come 2038, he may be viable again."

Doug Tudor recently received some national media exposure for opposing the Democratic compromise on FISA. Tudor's statement:

"On five occasions during my Navy career, I raised my hand and affirmed 'to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.' Members of Congress take a similar oath. I believe that those members who voted in favor of HR 6304 did so in violation of their oath of office. I would have voted against this bill."

Blue America rewarded him with a donation. But Tudor needs more help, as he is running against Telco donation magnet and Republican elitist Adam Putnam (Putnam received $12,500 from the telecoms this year). But it's time to get the word out about Doug Tudor and give him the netroots support he needs.

Howie Klein wrote a good article in the Huffington Post today, introducing Doug Tudor to the online community. Doug is a family man, a 20+ year Navy veteran running against Tom DeLay crony Adam Putnam, of dubious anti-Pelosi fame.

Doug retired from the Navy for the sole purpose of running for office in this seat. His wife is in the air force, and his family is living off just her salary for now. Doug is a solid candidate, but is a family man just like us, so he needs grassroots support to help his campaign along.
