The cell-phone video of the McKinney police abuse is yet the latest in a string of amateur sleuths providing transparency into the tactics of law enforcement officers.
However, the McKinney is very different in one major way: It did not involve a murder, or even an arrest. What happened there was just power gone awry.
In Ferguson, Baltimore, South Carolina - the list just goes on and on - the bottom line is abuse of power by those we have paid to protect us. Now the average citizen has a new tool to protect themselves: Their cellphone.
Cellphone videos have, and will, change our society for the better. The transparency they allow sheds light on those who wish to abuse.
I think we have moved to a new era. Because the reality is when anyone sees the video of the 15-year old girl thrown to the ground while calling for her mother, they are disgusted. The lies of yesterday can no longer cover that up.
Just as we must all be judicious as to what we do in public lest it be on the homepage of youtube, so must police officers. And when they don't think they can get away with it, they will stop.
