I thought that this should be brought to the attention of the community.
Below the squiggle is a bill that was introduced in South Carolina by three legislators - 2 of them members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Since ALECers are involved here - it will no doubt rapidly spread across the United States and I thought others should be aware and watchful.
This bill does not create voluntary participation - it creates mandatory participation - unless you opt out. You have to opt out - it is unclear as to whether you can do this once - or if you have to opt out every year.
You're first response may be - - this will never pass.
But you have to consider the fact that - - - it has been introduced.
If people don't know to watch for this - it just may pass.

There are many on this site interested in the American Legislative Exchange Council.
A historic event took place recently which was badly needed.
Being a member of ALEC is finally, a major campaign issue.
Dark money went on the attack against ALEC members and I couldn't be happier.
Short diary - clips below the squiggle.
Short diary - but hopefully helpful to someone.
When I was young– we were really poor – dirt poor farmers and we use to receive a box of USDA commodity food every once in a while (I was young and didn’t pay much attention). The best I can remember we got powdered milk my mom used for cooking – we got gelatinous canned beef that my mom turned into gourmet meals – we got a block of cheese. It must have been needed, because my parents never turned it down.
I was young then – now I’m older and the issue of food insecurity remains an issue.
As noted by some statistics by Feeding America, it is a real issue for seniors.
In 2013, 10 percent of seniors (4.2 million older adults age 65 and older) lived below the poverty line.
In 2013, 2.9 million (9%) households with seniors experienced food insecurity. 1.1 million (9%) households composed of seniors living alone experienced food insecurity.
The number of food insecure seniors is projected to increase by 50% when the youngest of the Baby Boom Generation reaches age 60 in 2025.
ALEC was exposed in 1997 and nothing at all happened.
ALEC was exposed again in 2002 with excellent reporting and again, nothing happened.
ALEC was exposed again in 2010/2011.
Bill Moyers referred to ALEC as:
"the most influential corporate-funded political force most of us have never heard of"
Will history repeat itself? ALEC Hopes so.
Neutralizing the influential political force of ALEC legislators - for the long term - may take more than most are willing to give.
First, hat tip to ALERT FOR TWIN CITIES PROGRESSIVES by thatotherguy.
Without that call for the Twin Cities - this info may have stayed hidden until it's too late.
More below the squiggle
The new year has started and along with it comes a season of ALEC meetings.
Why does it start now - for me?
Many of you may not be aware – because it is never spoken about –
the first action/protest against the American Legislative Exchange Council started HERE on DK for their April meeting in 2011 - was organized in a diary on DK. Never before had there been a protest again ALEC.
Without that protest there would have been no whistleblower – there would have been no document drop of legislation – there would have been no ALECExposed webpage at the Center for Media and Democracy.
HERE at DK is where it all started and I think it is necessary to give credit where credit is due to the whole DK Exposing ALEC group and the many activists and activist groups that participated in the successful 2011 Cincinnati ALEC action, an action that started HERE on Daily Kos.
This is just a quick dairy - basically an alert.
Do you want your local tax dollars paying for extremist ALEC policies?
Now is the time to say no and to start continually monitoring your local officials.
It appears ALEC has started a new program focusing on city and county officials.
For almost 40 years we didn't say no to ALEC at the state legislative level and look where it got us.
It is up to us to take action with our local officials
city and county officials
and let them know
- we are not okay with them becoming ALEC / Kochwhores.
The American City County Exchange works with local elected officials to promote efficiency and minimize waste by implementing limited government, free market solutions. The American City County Exchange is an affiliate of the American Legislative Exchange Council.
This time - we can't afford to play catch-up.
It's our responsibility to stop this - while we can.
Hopefully it's not too late already.
It's evidently too late in Page, AZ
“ ACCE helps connect me with other municipal officials who desire more efficiency and economic freedom in their communities.”
–Levi Tappan, City Councilman | Page, Arizona
Already parroting the ALEC meme - for what - free corporate scholarships?
Nothing below the squiggle.
We are currently watching what might be described as the implosion of the GOP at a national level as the Tea Party factions tears the GOP apart.
One thing any group needs is cohesion and cooperation among its members based on a shared purpose and mission - - a purpose and mission that is coherent and consistent.
Not only is there a mission/purpose backlash happening at the national level with the GOP, there may be the start of a mission / purpose backlash within ALEC by its own members. Why – who knows.
Maybe because ALEC members are not getting consistent messages from ALEC.
Or maybe it is due to media exposure that has caused ALEC to move some of its nastiness to other right wing groups and with that move, ALEC members also move to that group to continue whatever evil ALEC had originally, historically, privately professed.
My life is spent on ALEC. I found this information when researching ALEC and I tie it to ALEC. I probably won't do anything else on this unless ALEC involvement becomes more evident - but I thought the DK community should know what I found.
The Article V Constitution Convention
ALEC headquarters never cease to amaze me.
ALEC has been in the shadows for so long - they have absolutely no idea how to act, when exposed to sunlight.
Instead of owning up to what it does and has done - ALEC tries to cover up everything with a web of deception that inevitably comes back to bite them in the ... IRS audit that may be coming.
Dubya introduced us to the Axis of Evil, when for 40 years the true evil was being perpetuated by ALEC legislators, with their legislative Acts of Evil.
In 2005, the NRA pushed the Stand Your Ground law in Florida – then the NRA brought Stand Your Ground to an ALEC meeting and ALEC legislators started pushing it.
When ALEC finally got caught as the pusher of Stand Your Ground legislation its PR Poobah said:
"The American Legislative Exchange Council does not support Stand Your Ground policies. The Council focuses solely on pro-growth, economic issues to increase opportunity for all Americans."
Then last year they got caught again
Recently when legislation was introduced at an ALEC meeting for partial nullification of the 17th Amendment, its PR Poobah said:
After it wasn't advanced out of committee, the board also said any resolution on the 17th Amendment has to do with elections, and we don't do elections."
“We don’t do elections.”
Really? ALEC doesn’t do election law?
What about Voter ID?
In 2012 when they got their finger caught in the voter suppression jar it made this public statement:
“We are eliminating the ALEC Public Safety and Elections task force that dealt with non-economic issues, and reinvesting these resources in the task forces that focus on the economy. The remaining budgetary and economic issues will be reassigned.
You see ALEC – doesn’t accept responsibility for anything that ALEC does.
Last week, PR Watch published an article entitled:
Do ALEC Denials of Bill Tracking Signal an IRS Examination?
In that article it is noted that:
The official ALEC twitter account - @ALEC_States - tweeted publicly at the Brookings Institute: "@BrookingInst, we don't track our model policies."
ALEC got exposed by Brookings – and their response was
“we don't track our model policies."
ALEC – doesn’t accept responsibility for anything that ALEC does.
On December 3, the Guardian released an article that included the packet for the August 2013 ALEC Board Meeting. This packet has been reported widely - if you have not read the article or the document I recommend that you do, it's very enlightening.
Page 29 of the August 2013 ALEC Board meeting is a breakdown by state that shows ALEC membership. Two notables in the ALEC Board report are South Dakota and Iowa which show 100% of their legislators belonged to ALEC at the time of the August 2013 ALEC Board report.
Not so much!
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a diary about how ALEC had language on their 990's that stated they supported "limited representative government"
full [ALEC] membership shall be open to persons ... dedicated to "limited representative government
In that diary I brought to the communities attention the fact that ALEC opposes the 17th amendment and they would like to eliminate it. There was a lot of pushback to that statement. People said they wouldn't dare - it couldn't happen - the people would rebel.
In one comment
ALEC is evil (8+ / 0-)
for sure, and it is good to be alerted to this, but this one just ain't gonna fly - 2/3 of each house of congress and then 3/4 of the states must ratify. If the ALEC'ers want to waste their energy tilting this windmill perhaps that will distract them from other wrongdoing.
An Antidote to Hatred

To which I responded:
you're right if they tried to do it (9+ / 0-)
all at once.
But they don't and they won't.
Alec is deviously patient.
They will plan and plan and plan. They will dismantle things one piece at a time. They will use inflammatory rhetoric to get people on their side. And then, they can strike using the ALEC legislators who have dedicated themselves to "limited representative government" ready to wield the final blows.
They did that with the Vote ID bills and this is the new line in the sand that ALEC is drawing and they will try to cross it.

Well the planning has started and the dismantling one piece at a time is happening.
Ever waited by your phone for hours waiting for that exact minute when you could buy tickets to a concert for you favorite artist? Your phone is programmed with the number of the box office so you could just hit redial when the clock struck the proverbial, high noon - - you were prepared to get the best seats? Then it's time - you hit redial - you get the box office and all the really good tickets are gone - cause a corporate entity with pull and lots of money robo-d all the best seats so they could resell them. Pissed you off right?
Well, a similar thing is happening now in the real estate markets. A scam that leads me to mistrust any statements made in the press about the current state of the real estate market. Most people have never heard of this - so let me build you the story below the squiggle.
