The following is not an isolated incident.
Keep reading after the video.
It's amazing to me that someone could miss the point of the White House's calling-out of Fox News as much as CNN's Campbell Brown has.
It is almost becoming a ritual in our house these days. At the end of a long day at work, the wife and I turn on MSNBC and watch, stunned, as Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart put on the parade of angry right wing lunatics. We sit, mouths agape, as we see manufactured rage at town halls over something tangential to health care, we see Glenn Beck weeping over something called "oligarhy" and a whole circus of birthers, deathers, truthers, tenthers, and every other sort of "-er" you can think of (except "thinkers"). Obama is a Nazi, or a communist, or the antichrist, or the Hamburgler, or whatever.
Here is the part where a socially liberal, militantly atheistic, pajama'd blogger trumpets the blatant hypocrisy of politicians and leaders of the religious right who find their names in little black books, take wide stances in public bathrooms, use party funds to keep the kid quiet, or take long hikes through Appalachia. Ha! You see?? They all ride around on their high moral horses and then they blah, blah, blah, blah.
Joe Conason at Salon has already done the definitive smackdown of GOP moralism, and I certainly don't need to do a rehash. I'm less interested in the blatant double standard, and more interested in the role religion plays in these affairs, or rather, the role it never gets to play.
Last month, I bemoaned that the US media was keeping pretty silent about the passage of an anti-blasphemy resolution in the UN's poorly-named Human Rights Council. As the blog GetReligion.org noted, "It is probably no surprise . . . that the lead up to the passage of this resolution garnered only modest mainstream media notice." That is putting it mildly. About a week and a half has passed since then, and some mainstream media opinion has trickled in, the issue remains largely off the radar in the United States.
Thursday, an organization of Islamic states managed once again to shove its oppressive agenda down the throats of the United Nation's Human Rights Council, as well as the wider UN itself, legitimizing state acts of religiously-based oppression and the criminalization of speech, all in the hopes of building toward fully binding international law. This didn't seem to be "newsy" enough for coverage in the U.S. press, however. Unless you were already looking for news from mainstream outlets on the subject, you probably wouldn't ever have known what had taken place, even if you were an avid newspaper reader.
Let's do a check of who covered the UN Human Rights Council's vote to "combat defamation of religions" the following day.
As I near completion of my master's degree, I have had occasion to do some interesting anti-smear research concerning our little election season. A big part of this job entails going through the astounding mass of e-mails attacking Barack Obama...I'm sorry, I mean, revealing the TRUTH ABOUT BARAK OBAMA!!!! PLS FWD 4 YOURE COUNTRY!
Quick note: Remember when three of the GOP candidates for president raised their hand when asked in a debate who among them did not acknowledge the validity of evolution?
Well, none of them won the nomination, so that's why our Bronze Age friends must be very relieved by McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate.
Why should such an obviously honorable, heroic, and let's be honest, pure human being have to waste his time answering "questions" from "reporters" from Time "Magazine"?
I mean, look. He's already told you he should be president. And that should be enough for you info-nazis.
My wife is scared. She doesn't follow politics nearly as closely as I do (which is too much - I start cheering when Chuck Todd comes on TV), but she's smart and informed, and, more importantly, cares.
So the polls are even, the McCain impugn-o-matic machine is set to ludicrous speed, and about half the folks who voted for Hillary are either jumping the Democratic ship, or at least browsing the lifeboats.
Gather ye round and note! Or, hark! Michael Goldfard, 1st Level Douchebag of the McCain campaign has won yet another initiative roll, and has attacked with his Blog of Idiocy!
I don't know what to do with all my anger.
