It wasn't until the fourth century that dominant Christian leaders, [who were] all men, twisted and distorted Holy Scriptures to perpetuate their ascendant positions within the religious hierarchy." -former President Jimmy Carter. Story: -- Leslie Salzillo
For most of his life, Jimmy Carter has been an advocate for human rights. In 1982, one year after leaving the Oval Office, the former US President and his wife Rosalynn Carter, founded the Carter Center, dedicated to advancing peace and health worldwide. Still an activist at 90, Carter has authored 28 books, including a new book in 2014 called, A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power.

Over the years, Jimmy Carter, a devout Christian, has become a very strong proponent of women's rights, to a point where he has spoken out against the falsehoods and extremism we see within the 'religion' of Christianity today. In 2009, he penned an open letter, severing ties with the mega SBC/Southern Baptist Convention, after being a member of the Convention for 60 years. Carter said the decision was difficult and painful, yet 'unavoidable,' after the Convention leaders chose to take bible verses out of context and claim 'Eve' was responsible to for 'original sin,' and thus all women must be subservient to men. In Carter's aforementioned open letter, he expands on his reasons and concerns:

This discrimination, unjustifiably attributed to a Higher Authority, has provided a reason or excuse for the deprivation of women's equal rights across the world for centuries.

At its most repugnant, the belief that women must be subjugated to the wishes of men excuses slavery, violence, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and national laws that omit rape as a crime. But it also costs many millions of girls and women control over their own bodies and lives, and continues to deny them fair access to education, health, employment and influence within their own communities.

The same discriminatory thinking lies behind the continuing gender gap in pay and why there are still so few women in office in the West. The root of this prejudice lies deep in our histories, but its impact is felt every day. It is not women and girls alone who suffer. It damages all of us.

Carter states how the subjugation of women was not always a part of Christianity.
The carefully selected verses found in the Holy Scriptures to justify the superiority of men owe more to time and place - and the determination of male leaders to hold onto their influence - than eternal truths

I am also familiar with vivid descriptions in the same Scriptures in which women are revered as pre-eminent leaders. During the years of the early Christian church women served as deacons, priests, bishops, apostles, teachers and prophets. It wasn't until the fourth century that dominant Christian leaders, all men, twisted and distorted Holy Scriptures to perpetuate their ascendant positions within the religious hierarchy.

In his letter, Carter discusses the independent group of global leaders to which he belongs, called The Elders. Founded by the late Nelson Mandela, the members have come together on this issue and collectively published this statement to all religious leaders around the world:"The justification of discrimination against women and girls on grounds of religion or tradition, as if it were prescribed by a Higher Authority, is unacceptable." This discrimination can and must end says Carter. He believes it's within our power:
The truth is that male religious leaders have had - and still have - an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter. Their continuing choice provides the foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world. This is in clear violation not just of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but also the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, Moses and the prophets, Muhammad, and founders of other great religions - all of whom have called for proper and equitable treatment of all the children of God. It is time we had the courage to challenge these views.
Thank you, Mr. Carter, not only for the work you do for the sake of our daughters, our granddaughters, and their daughters, but also for our sons, grandsons, and the whole of humanity. Thank you, to you and Rosalynn for creating The Carter Center. And thank you for living by example. You are a good and true man, and this world is a better place by your presence.

Now with the "No Kardashians" parking violation signs, we have reached new and interesting places with signs demarcating (insert favorite problem)-free zones. If only the American Flag signified a fascist-free zone.
Dozens of "No Catcall Zone" signs have been popping up in New York City to keep unwanted jeers at bay during International Anti-Street Harassment Week.

Feminist Apparel, a nonprofit feminist clothing company, has claimed credit for the more than 50 street signs that have been spotted in Manhattan and Brooklyn this week.

"We hope to get at least one sign up in each borough by the end of the week as street harassment and catcalling is obviously a universal issue not contained to any one neighborhood,"the group said in a statement.

The campaign is part of a collaboration with Philadelphia's guerrilla feminist collective Pussy Division.

This "No Catcall Zone" sign is part of a project to end street harassment. Feminist Apparel clothing nonprofit has taken responsibility for them, and plan to put up more.

Feminist Apparel plans to "sneak up" a few more signs throughout the week, as well as sticker forms of the designs.

The signs have appeared near the Williamsburg Bridge, Chinatown and other parts of the two boroughs.

Reposted from ShoshannaD by ShoshannaD Editor's Note: They are all our girls/sh -- ShoshannaD

This is an anniversary no one, no one would want.

It has been a year since the girls in Chibok, Nigeria were kidnapped by Boko Haram.  As we know a brave and fortunate small group of them escaped almost immediately.  But there are still over 200 girls who are lost to their families.  Whose whereabouts we don't know. Along with so many others.

Although I am not a big fan of military action, I was pleased to see that a coalition that included Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon worked together to take back some of the ground seized by Boko Haram.  So far, however, they have not located the girls.  And while the newly elected President has promised to do whatever they can to find them, he was careful not to promise to bring them home.

But I continue to hope. I continue to remember.  Facebook link to the Bring Back Our Girls page below the fold if you want to follow it.  And there is a link to an Amnesty International article with a link to take action (please be warned, this article is quite disturbing).  Home, we all want them home.

Radio show host Rush Limbaugh speaks at a forum hosted by the Heritage Foundation, on the similarities between the war on terrorism and the television show
Reports are flying that the large Chicago Cumulus radio station WLS 890 am is about to drop Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh. Cumulus is denying the leak, however today's industry rumor closely follows a very out-of-character post by Limbaugh on his official Facebook page.

'Now that I've outgrown the 25-54 demographic, I'm no longer confident I see the world as everybody else does.' Hold the phone, what? It's hard to believe these defeatist words would come from El Rushbo, the self-proclaimed, ego-driven, 'Mayor of Realsville'. Rush Limbaugh's post was published not even 24 hours before media veteran Robert Feder came out with his article reporting a WLS 'leak' that Limbaugh is being dropped, after being with the station for 25 years.

There are hard facts here. The network continues to lose money in big numbers. WLS's revenue dropped from $13 million in 2013 to less than $9.5 million in 2014. The article also states that the overall market was down 10 percent last year. Feder adds:

If all goes as planned, Limbaugh’s syndicated talk show, which airs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, will be dropped by the end of March, according to insiders at WLS.

A Cumulus Media spokeswoman [at first] declined immediate comment. But a source familiar with the decision said it was based on the show’s diminished ratings and failure to generate advertising revenue for the station, adding: “It’s impossible to sell.”

This is not to say Rush Limbaugh will not show up on another Chicago station. We've been through this before with Cumulus crying poverty and whining that the Rush Limbaugh boycotts were dragging their revenue down. Then in August of 2013, media rumors lit up social media after Politico 'leaked' Limbaugh was being dropped by the network. Two weeks later, Cumulus and Limbaugh signed a new deal. It may have been a publicity stunt, or possibly a way for Cumulus to drive down the cost of a new deal with Limbaugh. Only the knowing parties are privy to that information.

This, however, seems different. Time Magazine and The Wall Street Journal now confirm the 'failure to generate ad revenue' is, in fact, due to social media campaigns like StopRush/BoycottRush/FlushRush. Limbaugh is not only in trouble himself; he has also become a huge ball and chain to the radio industry. Last week, IHeart Media (formerly Clear Channel) which carries the Rush Limbaugh Show on over 500 stations, reported a quarterly loss of $309 Million, adding to there billions of debt. It continues to look grim for the aging media bully, well known for hate speech, racism, misogyny, and homophobia.

A new surge in the Limbaugh protest is taking place. In addition to the Time and WSJ articles, the Rush Limbaugh Sponsor Boycott Petition reached 126k signatures last week, gaining over 20,000 new signees in 10 days. Real live people are publicly giving their names, addresses, and email addresses to in order to let Limbaugh sponsors know these consumers refuse to buy from companies that support hate speech/hate radio. And it's working. It's been working, due to hundreds of thousand of protestors/petitioners/boycotter and some very hard-working StopRush/FlushRush volunteers. The fruits of their labor might just now be ready to reap.

Talk radio's hate-monger has good reason to admit words of defeat on his Facebook page. Rush Limbaugh is losing. The American public is winning. How great is that.

Surprisingly, the quote in this story's title is not by Conservative talking head, Rush Limbaugh. It's by a Tea Party member outraged by Limbaugh's hate speech. 'Ricardo from New York' was the fifth person to sign the Rush Limbaugh Sponsor the petition just under three years ago. It was days after Limbaugh took to verbally attacking an unknown college student, who was advocating for birth control insurance coverage, also for medicinal purposes. Limbaugh called her a 'slut' for three days, on air, and it woke the sleeping lion in many.

Today the petition is now over 109,000 strong. Thousands of sponsors have left Limbaugh's show. What makes this petition particularly unique and effective is that with every 500 new signatures, the names of all 100k+ signees are emailed the current 40 sponsors on the list. When those companies watch the boycott continue to grow, along with the public's support of social media campaigns like StopRush, it spooks many of these sponsors into pulling their ads. Once a company discontinues their ads on Limbaugh's show, they are eventually removed from the petition.

Keep in mind, this is only one petition and one small part of this massive movement. There are Facebook pages and Twitter groups, large Liberal websites, and some mainstream media outlets, in addition to the public, who are also supporting this cause. Protestors simply want Rush Limbaugh's vile commentary off the airwaves. Hate speech can lead to bullying, abuse, violence, and murder. It does not belong on any public platform, much less public radio.

Here are just 20 reasons why people said they signed the petition, some comments going as far back as 2012, and some as recent as this week. They all carry the same theme: 'You sponsor this hate monger - you lose us as customers.

Candy of WA:
25 years of abuse is enough. Mr. Limbaugh is tainting our true meaning of broadcasting. This man opens his mouth and I am not entertained, I am insulted and ashamed that a man would behave and talk the way he does and gets away with it. It is time to put a sock in his mouth once and for all. Anyone who advertises for his has lost my buying power with them.

I spent many hours listening to Limbaugh in the past, but no more. This sort of hate filled and poisonous talk leads to dehumanization and then you don't have adversaries, you have enemies. I will not buy the products of any company who is okay with marching down this road if there's a buck in it for them.

I am signing for my granddaughter and millions of other women--my family will stop buying any product associated with this man's show.

Limbaugh's constant, hateful attacks on President Obama are pitiful. I have left the Republican party, and have become a big fan of President Obama, partly because of Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck and Levin's over-the-top, ridiculous statements! These people are pitiful... and are impossible to listen to seriously, by a normal person for more than a few minutes. When I force myself to listen to these guys for a few minutes, which is about as much as I can take, I copy down the advertisers, and make sure I DO NOT buy the products! I cannot imagine why any responsible advertiser would support this type of radio.

I vote with my $$. Any business, corporation, or entity that supports hate mongering, bullying, and general malfeasance like the brand that Rush Limbaugh embraces, will never see a dollar of mine. This is something I am very adamant about, and I keep a roster of such companies to make sure I don't erroneously or absentmindedly support as a consumer of products & services.

Rush Limbaugh is so much of a bully to people who have no ability to fight back. Rush does not listen to rational people, when someone tries to fight back he does not permit them to defend themselves and puts them down when they try. He reminds me of my abusive stepfather and I was so glad to get out of my house at 17. I will not use any of his sponsors and will make sure all of my friends know why.
James of  FL
I believe in free speech, so Rush can say what he wants. I also believe in Capitalism so if I owned a company, I would be cognizant of where I advertise. Thus, if you advertise with rush Limbaugh, you have made a conscious choice to position yourself with a racist, sexist bigot, and as a consumer I can and should tell you that I will no longer purchase your products.

I won't support hate speech, sexism, racism, class warfare, warmongering, anti-gay and lgbt hatred, misinformation, and gun lobbying. Snapple used to sponsor his show when he first started and I haven't bought a bottle of the stuff since 1990. They'll get not a penny from my pocket, ever!

Radio show host Rush Limbaugh speaks at a forum hosted by the Heritage Foundation, on the similarities between the war on terrorism and the television show
The Wall Street Journal, owned by Fox Network's Rupert Murdoch, published a surprising story Wednesday. The piece is titled, Talk Radio’s Advertising Problem, and it seems the biggest problem in talk radio today is hate monger, Rush Limbaugh. But first, in the WSJ piece, writer Hannah Karp explains just how bad the problem is:
Talk and news stations combined generated $1.5 billion in revenue in 2013, down from $1.6 billion in 2011, according to the latest numbers from media research firm BIA/Kelsey. Pure talk-station revenue fell to $205 million, from $217 million. The number of talk stations shrank to 510 from 546 over that time period, while the number of news stations increased by 150 to total 1,524.
Here's where it gets interesting.
The shift reflects more than younger listeners flocking to digital media.Radio executives said the erosion of ad dollars from talk stations was driven in part by a series of organized social-media campaigns by liberal activists in early 2012 that scared away advertisers.
That would be campaigns created by hundreds of thousands of angry everyday people who joined online groups like #StopRush, Boycott/Rush, #FlushRush, Facebook pages/organizations like NOW,, Being Liberal and Political Loudmouth… , and online news groups that include, Media Matters, Liberals Unite, Addicting Info, Alternet, Think Progress, CrooksAndLiars, and Daily Kos.

Most of the social media campaigns began in 2012 after Rush Limbaugh blasted an unknown college student for advocating birth control at a congressional hearing. Limbaugh berated her on air for three days. He called her a 'slut' and 'prostitute,' and told her if 'he' had to pay for her birth control (a bogus statement), then he wanted to see a video of her having sex. Because this is how Limbaugh operates: (VIDEO)

There are many more reasons for this protest. Many believe Rush Limbaugh promotes, and provokes racism, homophobia, and misogyny. Thousands of malign Limbaugh quotes have been documented. He calls children on government-assisted lunches 'wanton little waifs and surfs,' implies gay men are 'pedophiles,' calls women 'semen receptacles,' and calls documented immigrants a 'lazy', 'invasive species' of 'mollusks' and 'spermatozoa'. This kind of hate speech can lead to bullying, abuse, violent hate crimes, and murder.

People around the country, as well as here at Daily Kos, have witnessed the slow deconstruction of Rush Limbaugh's career, due to protests, boycotts, and petitions. We've seen firsthand how powerful it can be when the public takes to their own means, after being ignored by mainstream media, the FCC, and the radio industry.

Some are concerned that the Limbaugh is adversely affecting Liberal talk shows. That is not the fault of the people. That is the fault of Bob Pittman, president of iHeart Media and Clear Channel, for continuing to air Limbaugh's misogynist, racist, anti-LGBT bile nationwide. Ironically, his colossal media company is the same radio network that axed the Dixie Chicks from all Clear Channel stations, after the country music trio publicly denounced George 'W' for starting the war in Iraq. Yes, the network cut all Dixie Chicks airplay from their 800+ stations, because that kind of fee speech is unacceptable. How things do come around. Yet Pittman/Clear Channel/iHeart still support Rush Limbaugh. There's your trouble, Bob.

A year ago, iHeartMedia—formerly known as Clear Channel —moved Mr. Limbaugh’s show from its flagship Los Angeles talk station, KFI, to another of its Los Angeles stations, KTLK. KFI’s revenue had fallen to $39 million in 2013, from $48.1 million in 2011, according to Bia/Kelsey. An iHeartMedia spokeswoman declined to comment.
Not to mention, Clear Channel/iHeart, the Bain-brained network home of 'Hate Radio,' continues to remain billions in debt.

So, one can say, when the Wall Street Journal numbers prove social media activism is kicking the ass of Rush Limbaugh and hate radio, I'd say the boycotting consumers, as well as the activists, are doing something very right. So much for Rush Limbaugh's new PR team trying to ridiculously claim StopRush is made up of a handful of 'bullies'. That's called desperation. This is a clear victory for the people in this country who value free speech, and who have chosen to take action, rather than sitting around bitching about Rush Limbaugh. They want to see the end of hate speech on our public radio airways, and according to WSJ numbers, they are being heard.

Rush Limbaugh, eating a cigar
It seems the larger mainstream media outlets like Time Magazine are starting to realize that 'small-fry' social media outlets have become a force to be reckoned with.

Last week, I published a Daily Kos diary about Wall Street Journal radio statistics. The industry numbers confirmed social media campaigns are winning the fight against hate radio, namely Rush Limbaugh. And now, Time Magazine is jumping in. Both are seeing social media groups like StopRush, BoycottRush, and FlushRush cause Rush Limbaugh to lose sponsors, radio stations, and market standings. And these groups are supported by larger social media news organization/blogs like Daily Kos, Media Matters, Liberals Unite,, Alternet, Addicting Info, Politico, and PoliticusUSA… who continue to cover/promote stories about the Limbaugh protest. Despite all of Limbaugh's money and best efforts to squelch the protest, it just keeps growing.

Time Magazine writer, Brian Rosenwald, chimed in on Wednesday. Rosenwald is completing his doctoral dissertation. In this article he discusses how talk radio has changed politics/public policy and how, now, the internet is changing talk radio. For decades, Limbaugh could get away with atrocities like making up sick songs about AIDS victims and getting away with it. Rosenwald goes on to say it's very different now:

Today, by contrast, every word that Limbaugh says is broadcast and archived. Watchdog groups, such as Media Matters, scrutinize every word, waiting to blast any potentially offensive statements out to the world. Whereas the opinions of non-listeners might have been irrelevant in 1988 and a boycott hard to organize, someone who considered the Elba comments to be racist could easily use social media to pressure advertisers to remove their ads from Limbaugh’s program (as many did in 2012 after Limbaugh insulted Georgetown student Sandra Fluke).
Most folks following the protest know that current campaigns not only pressured advertisers in 2012, they have continued to do so for three years.

Rosenwald goes on to say Limbaugh's hateful and inflammatory words now go beyond the ears of his dittoheads/fans/listeners. His vitriol can easily reach hundreds of thousands via social media campaigns:

[Radio] Hosts’ words far more easily reach non-listeners than they did 25 years ago. Indeed, a show’s actual audience need not be bothered for comments to cause trouble. Campaigns against a host can build over time, and social media makes it easy to pressure station management and advertisers.

In fact, the provocative, unpredictable content that produces the best talk radio fits poorly with an advertiser-based business model in the Internet and social media era. This problem may eventually drive the content provided by Limbaugh and his peers to an internet-based subscription platform, where hosts do not have to worry about losing advertisers when they generate controversy.

That's the goal for many protesting Rush Limbaugh. They feel we all have the right to free speech, including Limbaugh, as protestors practice their own First Amendment rights via protests, petitions and boycotts. The difference, many say, is that much of Rush Limbaugh's vile commentary is hate speech, and he dangerously promotes misogyny, anti-lgbt hatred, and racism. This in turn can lead to bullying, abuse, hate crimes, violence, and murder. The public has had enough and they want this type of talk show off their public radio. 'Let him take his vitriol private.'

Change is happening - positive change, and it's due to every day people becoming more proactive in fighting extremism. No more do we have to write, stamp, and mail letters to companies with our grievances, then wonder if anyone will read them. No longer to we have to wait on the phone for hours to talk with someone who might care. Now we can simply post our thoughts/complaints onto the company's Facebook/Twitter pages with a few clicks. Most likely someone in the company will see it, and it behooves them to address the consumers. One bad customer experience can go viral. This may seem intimidating, but in reality it's simply the beauty of America's free market, except this time, free market is to the advantage of the people. This gives citizens the option to boycott/not buy from companies that support odious hate mongers like Limbaugh and highly abhorrent, propagated media.

To join the massive and successful protest against hate radio, here are some easy things most anyone can do.

No more do we have to physically go door to door to ask folks to sign petitions. This is about the public using social media to protest hate speech and hate media. Rush Limbaugh shouting.
Yes, it's true. Conservative 'hate radio' talk show host, Rush Limbaugh, is having such a hard time getting and keeping sponsors for his show due to the national boycott, he's airing promo ads of himself. That's right. He'll show those pesky boycotters, protestors, and petitioners who's the boss! Don't mess with Rush or he'll come back with… Rush.

On January 14, during a normal sponsor break on WJR in Detroit, only one ad (Square Trade) played, followed by PSAs (public service announcements) and promos for other shows on the same network. During that break (where many large prominent sponsors once lived), a monitoring StopRush volunteer noted two unusual promos for The Rush Limbaugh Show. It was documented in the Database by the people who monitor his shows. Of course, before the ad break, Limbaugh was blaming and ranting about how 'folks' should be livid with the Democrats and the president, for Obama's constant abuse of executive powers - and everything bad in the world. (It's what he does when he's not bullying, degrading, lying, slandering and provoking hatred about blacks, LGBT (Lesbians, Gays, BiSexuasl & Transgenders) women, hispanics…)

He's a good little Koch-sucker and keeps the propaganda going for the Tea Party, because that's what he's paid to do! But, Limbaugh's career is in ruins, and began taking its dive days after he verbally attacked an unknown law student calling her a 'slut' for advocating for birth control. It seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back, just around the time the public was  discovering the power of social media. Now consumers can contact, petition, protest, and boycott companies simply by posting on their Facebook/Twitter pages. No stamps, long letters, trips to the post office, hours on the phone… Can't get to Rush? Get to his lifeline, his advertisers - in seconds.

When the Rush Limbaugh Sponsor Boycott began, Limbaugh compared losing sponsors, to losing a few french fries. After thousands of 'french fries' left his show during the last three years, Limbaugh has become a very angry and bitter UnHappy Meal. He's tried every trick to expose and unethically attack StopRush volunteers and win back sponsors. When contacted by concerned consumers, many sponsors spilled the beans, revealing Limbaugh offered them deep discounted/free ads. And some of them turned down those generous offers. The reason - Limbaugh can be the kiss of death for a company's reputation and bottom profit line. Studies have proven it's a very bad idea to ignore social media complaints. Blow off someone who's writing you on Facebook and Twitter, and their bad experience might just go viral for millions of customers to see. It's easier to just pull the ads from Limbaugh's show. So, that's what they do.

What's a flailing talk show host to do when you can't find sponsors? Sponsor yourself!

To join the hundreds of thousands who are participating in this effective anti-Limbaugh protest, here are several easy things you can do, without leaving the comfort of your home or pulling out your wallet:

Thank you to all the hard working StopRush, FlushRush and Boycott Rush volunteers who are contacting/documenting/exposing Limbaugh sponsors. They do this, along with consumers, activists, and left-leaning news groups/blogs like Think Progress, Liberals Unite, Addicting Info, AlterNet, Reverb, Politico, Politicus… and a huge amount of pro-activism/anti-Limbaugh press here on Daily Kos). This is how we do it when the so-called powers that be (FCC, Clear Channel/iHeart, Cumulus…) ignore the people; for it's the people who are the true powers that be.

Special thanks: Kossack Gary Finn/Steelbeard1 and Freya Malin.

Rest in peace, Kossack Richard Myers. Thank you. We will finish this.

Rush Limbaugh, eating a cigar
When you send vile hatred out to the public and to the universe for 25 years, there's no telling what you'll get back.

According to Tim Reardon at ABC affiliate, Newsnet.5, Rush Limbaugh received death threats and controversial accusations from 46-year-old Christopher Modenbach of Cleveland, Ohio. The threats were sent December 19, 2014. I called the Palm Beach Police Department to confirm the information, and it is all on file.

The first email from Modenbach to Rush Limbaugh on December 19, was as written:

Subject Line: Your Fan

"Rush Limbaugh is a child molester- you ever touch my son-I will kill you and cut your wifes head off Rush stay away from young Children I`am going to teach you a lesson-perv-you`re a dead man- DEAD MAN".

The second email on the same day states:
Subject Line: PERV

"Rush Limbaugh is a perv and child molester You`re a DEAD MAN."

After being tracked down and called by a Limbaugh's rep and the Palm Beach Police Department, Modenbach reportedly said he was drinking 'beer and vodka' that night, would never have carried out the threats, apologized, and promised never to send threatening emails again. At first, Limbaugh was said to have wanted to prosecute, then opted to have the incident documented, instead. The Palm Beach Police checked on Modenbach via the Ohio Bureau of Investigation, and found no related criminal arrests, but did find 'multiple DUIs' and an order of protection filed by Modenbach's girlfriend.

As much as I try, I can't help but despise Rush Limbaugh for his vile and hate-provoking commentary, but I do not wish him dead, nor condone death threats. Accusations or implications that someone is a child molester is serious, and ironically, it's more Limbaugh's modus operandi. The host of 'hate radio' has alluded that homosexuals are pedophiles. It's interesting when someone turns garbage accusations around on him. For that I have no sympathy.

Rush Limbaugh has made a lot of enemies over the last two decades by bullying, humiliating, demeaning, slandering and degrading others with no remorse or apologies.

In this quote recorded by Media Matters, Rush Limbaugh insidiously implies gay men are most likely pedophiles.

LIMBAUGH: Sandusky does not represent all of homosexuality, just like the priests in the Catholic Church don't represent all of homosexuality, just like the aberrant criminals in heterosexual society don't represent all heterosexuals. But because the gay lobby is very powerful, people don't go there. People don't address it, they don't talk about it, and as such, an element of the problem never gets dealt with.
In another quote, Limbaugh implies the public accepting gay marriage is like the public accepting pedophilia.

Hundreds of malign Limbaugh quotes have been documented, including calling a female law student  -'slut' and 'prostitute', calling children on government-assisted lunches - 'wanton little waifs and surfs', calling women - 'semen receptacles', and calling undocumented immigrants - 'lazy', 'invasive species', 'mollusks,' and 'spermatozoa', and comparing composites of wanted criminals to pictures of African American activist, Jesse Jackson.

Limbaugh is a hate monger, and today, hundreds of thousands of Americans are protesting him by signing petitions and boycotting companies who choose to sponsor his malicious dialogue. He has lost thousands of advertisers over the last three years, due to a reignited StopRush/BoycottRush/FlushRush national protest and Limbaugh's career is flailing.

Thankfully, there are ways people can express their outrage over Limbaugh's racism, misogyny, homophobia and bigotry - without violence or threats. Here are several:

The accused, Christopher Modenbach, apparently needs professional psychiatric help. Rush Limbaugh also needs professional help, but he mostly needs to get the fuck off our public radio and take his bile hate speech private. Some cry, 'freedom of speech'! I'm all for that - but not hate speech. I refuse to stand by while someone promotes hatred, racism, homophobia and misogyny - which can lead to prejudice, violence, and possibly murder. Hate speech defined and catapulted Adolf Hitler into becoming a mass murderer like history has never seen - In the beginning, while Hitler was spewing Aryan and White Supremacy, no one did anything. This is why I (and many others) continue the fight to remove hate speech from our public radio system. It was not created for hate mongers to make millions poisoning the minds of the ignorant, mentally unstable, and vulnerable.

Ironically, the accused, Christopher Mondenback, is a listener of The Rush Limbaugh Show. As they say, 'hate begets hate.'

With some stories, I'm not sure where to begin, because the news has me stunned and almost speechless. I want to turn away, block it out and find something happy to do, or something else to think about, or write about. But I can't. And so I begin.

Last week, a young woman in El Salvador who goes by the alias name of 'Guadalupe,' had very high hopes, and was all but assured she would receive a pardon from her 30-year sentence. She had already served seven years, starting in her teens. Her alleged crime? Fetal homicide. She miscarried, and was charged with murder.

Her pardon didn't come. Guadalupe's freedom was one vote short. Her fate was determined by a Right-Wing congressional majority of 43-42. I can't write about something like this and not feel like I've been punched in the stomach again and again. Guadalupe represents every woman. This is what happens when abortion is illegal. El Salvador is known to be one of the worst countries in the world for women's reproductive rights.

According to Tim Rogers at

All forms of abortion are illegal in El Salvador. And though there was no indication that Guadalupe, a mother of one, intentionally terminated her pregnancy, the doctors snitched her out to save themselves from any criminal liability.

Guadalupe, who never saw the inside of a fifth grade classroom, was interrogated in her hospital bed without a lawyer. The Kafkaesque trial was brutal and swift. Before Guadalupe knew what was happening, she was sentenced to 30 years in jail and thrown behind bars with convicted murders.

If Guadalupe’s story sounds crazy, that’s because it is. Not only does El Salvador have one of the most draconian anti-abortion laws in the world, but authorities there apply the tyrannical law with an aggressiveness that borders on obsessive. Dozens of Salvadoran women — mostly young, and all poor — are behind bars for homicide

At least 29 women are behind bars in El Salvador for abortion/miscarriage. A group of them called, #Las17, are serving between 12-40 years with the oldest being 29, reports Rogers.

Here is a short video by the Center For Reproductive Rights created to expose El Salvador's atrocious treatment of women. Most victims of reproductive injustices are from impoverished communities. No, these are not laws for the rich.

Sadly, we can't say this would never happen to us in America, because it's happening.

Currently, at least 38 states have fetal homicide laws. The states include: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. At least 23 states have fetal homicide laws that apply to the earliest stages of pregnancy ("any state of gestation," "conception," "fertilization" or "post-fertilization"). Read more at NCSL.
Last fall, I wrote a Daily Kos diary entailing five horrific American injustices against pregnant women, via a study reported in the New York Times. I must warn it also contains stories, like this, that may be emotionally triggering:
DC Judge Forces Woman To Have Cesarean & She Dies - 5 Shocking Injustices Against Pregnant Women
The battle for reproductive freedom is an ongoing struggle that will most likely continue past our lifetimes. We continue this fight for our daughters, and granddaughters, because our mothers, grandmothers, and pro-choice supporters (male and female) did the same for us. There are many ways we can show our support. Here are 10 large/small pro-choice organizations/Facebook pages you can visit/join now. They offer ways to help and be helped.
Planned Parenthood
Emily's List
NARAL/Pro-Choice America
NAF/National Abortion Federation
Fight Laws Against Women
Pro-Choice Liberals
Abigail Adams Brigade
The Guttmacher Institute is an excellent source of current reproductive rights legislation.
The only way I can think to end this story, is to ask folks to share it, whether it's this diary, the video, or any article(s) about the story. By getting the information out to the public, we keep Guadalupe, and others like her, from getting lost in the shuffle. Nothing will change until more of the world becomes aware. Only then can we find solutions, create positive change and prevent it from happening again.

Thanks to Collier Meyerson/Jezebel for sharing the story.

For decades, anti-choice Republican lawmakers have tried to chip away at the legal reproductive rights of women, and the battle continues today. When it comes to  late-term abortion, the topic is more difficult even for some Liberals/Democrats. The reason for this is because late-term abortion is highly misunderstood.

The late Molly Ivins was never known to hold back on her thoughts and beliefs. The journalist, columnist, commentator, and author, raised in Texas, had a wonderful gift of getting her messages across through endearing humor and streetwise reality.

Here she is speaking about late-term abortions at The Connecticut Forum's "A Changing Political Landscape" in 1996. Ivins explains late-term abortions in a way I've never heard before, and in a way I will never forget.

Other panelists on this particular forum included James Carville, Oliver North, Ralph Reed (not seen in this video) and moderator Gwen Ifill.

Here is text from the video:

There's something very wrong in our discussion of this. If there's anything that late-term abortion is, it is not an easy call.

And I just want to say, that perhaps, I almost get the impression that somebody thinks women don't have no moral sense at all. No woman who is seven months pregnant, ever waddles past an abortion clinic and says,

'Darn, I knew there was something I've been meaning to get around to.'

This is ridiculous.

You have those late-term abortions, because either the mother is going to die, the child is going to die, or both are going to die. These procedures are incredibly rare. I only know of two in the state of Texas since Roe v. Wade was passed. They were both what they call cases of babies with no brain. The brain, the child's brain stem had developed, but then something went horribly wrong and these children literally had no brains. Now, is that an easy call? Is that simple to you?

I am really, I'm… let me try and calm down - it's not going to do any good for me to get excited. If the choice… These are women who want their babies, they want the babies, terribly. What would you do, and I'm talking to the women in the audience. If a doctor said to you,

'Either your baby has to die, or you will die, or your health will be wrecked for the rest of your life, and you'll never be able to have another child.'

I don't know what you'd do. I think you'd want a second opinion. But if I were you, I sure as hell wouldn't ask Bob Dole, because I don't think that's an easy call.

There's a new powerhouse in town called The organization takes a strong proactive approach to fight the Republican War on Women and constant assault on women's reproductive rights.

Last week, took to the streets in Washington DC to counter protest the Anti-Choice March for Life, held every year to to mark the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. On this anniversary, the March for Life was halted for at least 30 minutes, as eight members were arrested.

As arrestees were put in the police paddy wagon, they could be heard chanting:

”Every generation - has an obligation - to women’s liberation!"
"That Congress has scheduled a vote on a federal ban on abortion at 20 weeks on this day only underscores the need to stand up and resist," said Sunsara Taylor, initiator of Stop Patriarchy. “Abortion rights are in a state of emergency, clinics are being forced to close and women are being forced once again to have children against their will. The fight over abortion has never been about babies, it has always been about controlling women. Forcing women to have children against their will is a form of enslavement and we refuse to accept this.”
Activists were wearing all white with fake blood-soaked pants, representing the women who died from dangerous “back alley” abortions before Roe v. Wade. They also carried enlarged photographs of women who died from illegal abortion before Roe.

47,000 women around the world die every year from illegal, unsafe, abortions
5,000 women in the US are estimated to have died every year from illegal, unsafe abortions before Roe v.Wade legalized abortion
42 states prohibit abortion at some point in the pregnancy
87% of all counties in the U.S. have no abortion provider
6 states have only one surgical abortion clinic
8 abortion providers (doctors and staff) have been murdered by anti-abortion fanatics.

Other rallies against 'March For Lies' took place in Chicago, Atlanta, Austin, and San Francisco. In addition there were related actions in Oakland and Cleveland, all within the last week. While there have been yearly counter-protests on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, this type of direct action has not been seen in many years.

In their Call To Action, StopPatriarchy published this greatly informative YouTube video:
