Richard Lewis and Friends Mock Political Deception with New Web Commercials
Can comedian and actor Richard Lewis talk politicians into being honest? Probably not, but that’s not keeping a band of top comics and actors from giving it a shot. Consequently, personalities like Lewis, Rita Rudner, Paul Rodriguez, Bruce Davison, Danny Woodburn, Harry Hamlin and Ed Asner are appearing in a series of satirical public service announcements endorsing the nonpartisan, Flackcheck.org, an offshoot website of the Annenberg Public Policy Center.
Flackcheck, the sister site of Factcheck.org, creates tongue-in-cheek videos spotlighting political misrepresentation by politicians, candidates, pundits and political parties and their misinformation in campaign commercials, speeches and newscasts.
In one ad, Lewis and the others feigns disbelief in anyone wanting to take a politician’s “constitutional right” to misrepresent the facts. As Davison puts it, “Surely you don’t want your candidates spending valuable time trying to figure out what’s accurate and what isn’t.” Lewis adds, “For years, distortion of fact has been the staple of political creativity.”
Annenberg Public Policy Center Director and Flackcheck founder, Kathleen Jamieson, believes using satire to promote a satirical website choice. “It was a lot easier to find honest comedians than honest political campaigns.” said Jamieson.
