Like many of you, I am puzzled by the animosity towards Hillary Clinton and the “adoption” of Donald Trump by the religious right so I asked someone I know who is a sporadic conservative Christian. What she said made sense — in her world of Facebook. There was an explanation about all the horrible things Hillary had done, and how Trump was the lesser of two evils, how the Rapture is coming and Trump will wipe out the troublemakers…..and then asked me — “Don’t you see the posts on Facebook on this?” I’m amazed how she lives in a different universe on Facebook. (I’ve glimpsed some of this when a conservative cousin shares a page, or likes a post, but for my own sanity I’ve hidden or not read them.). These feeds act as echo chambers, reinforcing an individual’s beliefs and spreading hateful speech as truth. Have we reached a point in this election that Facebook is the primary source of information for people which are then repeated over and over by ministers, friends, and organizations until it becomes an accepted falsehood? I did my best to give her some facts (i.e. Hillary is responsible for the health insurance your son has had since he was born), and we had an interesting conversation — but whew! We have to get the message out to voters about the truth of this election. Any ideas on how to create or find an objective, reliable database of information that provides voters real facts about the candidates? Instead of arguing we could just point them to the database. What do you think?
