by amejr999

Saw this on the CNN ticker, and there's nothing like a nice veto threat to make a busy Tuesday even busier.

CNN Political Ticker

Democratic presidential frontrunner Sen. Hillary Clinton is reportedly receiving advice on Iraq from an unlikely source: President Bush.

White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten tells The Examiner's Bill Sammon that the president has been urging the New York senator and some of the other candidates not to "get yourself too locked in where you stand right now. If you end up sitting where I sit, things could change dramatically."

BREAKING: Gonzales approved firings.

by amejr999

He's gone.
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales approved plans to fire several U.S. attorneys in a November meeting, according to documents released Friday that contradict earlier claims that he was not closely involved in the dismissals. The Nov. 27 meeting, in which the attorney general and at least five top Justice Department officials participated, focused on a five-step plan for carrying out the firings of the prosecutors, Justice Department officials said late Friday.
On March 13, in explaining the firings, Gonzales told reporters he was aware that some of the dismissals were being discussed but was not involved in them. More soon.

Negative Precinct count in VA

by amejr999

Take a look at .  This is the official results site of the Virginia SoS.  An hour or two ago, the number of precincts reporting was 99.88%, or all but 3.  Now the count is

Precincts Reporting: 2458 of 2599 (94.57%)

Something's up.  How can the number of reporting precincts go down while the vote totals apparently stay the same?

The infamous NSA wiretapping program was just ruled unconstitutional by a US district judge. The suit was brought by the ACLU on behalf of people who thought they might be being wiretapped. The judge rejected the 'state secrets' argument as well as the argument that the President has the inherent authority to conduct the wiretaps.

DETROIT - A federal judge ruled Thursday that the government's warrantless wiretapping program is unconstitutional and ordered an immediate halt to it.

The police state has begun

by amejr999

It's started.  The Supreme Court just ruled, 5-4, that police do not have to knock before barging into someone's home.  Guess who voted for the government- Scalia and Roberts.

Breaking from CNN- Attorney General and FBI chief indicated they might resign in showdown over search of congressman's office, sources tell CNN.

Update soon!

This appears to be over the Jefferson congress search scandal.  Rumors yesterday said that Gonzales was considering resigning if Bush forced them to return the documents, but the 45-day seal was expected to placate them.  Apparently not!

Patriot Act expires Friday!

by amejr999

Our work is only just beginning.  It has been almost completely ignored that the extended Patriot Act will expire on Feb. 3- this Friday.  This could quickly become a repeat of what occured last month.  Start early- call, write, and fax your Representatives and Senators.  This issue will expand very quickly, and it's important to have as much time as possible.  Tell Congress that you want civil liberties protections in the Patriot Act!

It's been reported that Bush will talk about the Patriot Act in the SOTU speech tonight.

This diary can be used as a central repository for Senator phone numbers that ARE NOT FULL, including both Washington and local offices.  If you have a number THAT IS NOT FULL, please post a comment with it.  To make this as useful as possible, don't post any comments except phone numbers.  If a phone number is in fact full, post a reply that it is now full.  This should make it easier for people to call the most worthwhile targets.

To start:
Lincoln Chafee (R-RI).  202-224-2921, press 2 at the prompt and hold through the message.
