Table with yellow teapot and cloth embroidered with blue flowers

As many people know, I live in an extremely red section of my state. It is a somewhat rural area but the best of both worlds with horse properties, a mish-mash of homes from weathered mobile homes that are no longer allowed, aging two bedroom rock houses to McMansions, dirt roads and septic. Yet civilization and a grocery store is only four and half miles away.

My husband and I know many of the people in our small world because we walk our dog on a two-and-a-half mile loop almost everyday, and those with dogs will understand how easy it is to meet people that remember your dog’s name while forgetting yours.

I’ve written before about the people in our area that show us their guns and we know three such people that profess to be armed at all times, even while sitting in their living rooms drinking beer and watching sports or FOX. Several people, in fact the majority of those we know watch FOX religiously.

During the campaign for Kerry/Edwards in 2004, we proudly hung a sign on our fence and it was a decision that we’ve learned to regret except that we did meet one other Democrat at that time. A woman purposely sought us out to tell us that she was very happy to know that there was at least one other Democratic household in our neighborhood. Since then, we have learned of two more Democratic couples but we’ve grown uneasy since the election of Barack Obama because of the hostility that seems to have overtaken Republican-voters. Just last Halloween we shared horror stories of keyed vehicles that sported Obama-stickers and angry tailgaters and worse, and we agreed that things have changed since 2004 and we no longer feel safe with public displays concerning our politics, but we also agreed that we must stick together, quietly.

Until recently, I found myself literally hating people, my neighbors, for their politics and I considered them enemies and because of that, it changed me and how I interacted when encountering them on our walks.

And it made me miserable and honestly, paranoid.

When the opportunities arose in which politics entered conversations, my hate for Republicans surfaced and provoked anger and led to me being unable to vocalize rationally an opposing viewpoint. I dislike confrontation anyway but when my emotions run high, it renders me useless.

And it makes me feel stupid, inadequate, and miserable.

I had a decision to make, because overall, most of my neighbors are truly nice people and they are not heartless. We’ve received help from neighbors many times and most of those times without even having to ask.
These are people who offered help after my husband’s surgery and consoled me, including hugs, after the death of my brother.

I made the choice to ignore politics when it comes to my neighbors because it was making me so very unhappy. I realized that I would never be able to change my neighbors’ minds regarding their politics just as they would never change mine. After all, I’ve always voted for Democrats just as they’ve always voted for Republicans.

I started looking at politics differently and viewing it from a distance and that has helped me gain an understanding and come to the conclusion that politics is not everything.

And it’s made me happier and has given me peace of mind.

Now when we encounter neighbors, as we did the other morning, I am able to actually listen to complaints and in that case it was regarding Obamacare and because I was calm, I found that I do have the ability to speak cogently. It didn’t hurt that we’d just signed me up for Obamacare the day before and were knowledgeable about the process.
Our neighbor was relieved after our chat and in much better spirits, and due to our calm discussion, she realized that things she’d been hearing on FOX were wrong.
And that made me very happy.

How do you get along with your Republican friends, coworkers, neighbors and family?

I am going to NN15

by arizonablue

I think I'm confused about the purpose of Netroots Nation.

I thought that Netroots Nation was a political convention in which Democrats, Liberals and Progressives exchanged ideas to inspire involvement for Democratic causes.

It's my understanding that United We Dream and other Latino Groups, including Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva asked Netroots Nation to come to Phoenix to help Latinos in my state fight against racist bigotry and to motivate and encourage Latinos to get active and vote. To encourage and motivate other Democrats, Liberals and Progressives to stand against the racist bigotry not only in Arizona but also in other states.

I thought Netroots Nation was an inspirational grassroots organization for Democratic ideals.

As a resident of Arizona and not that far from Phoenix, I have registered with Netroots Nation and hope to volunteer to help make NN15 a success.
I hope to assist in registering voters.
I hope to learn more, the challenges we as Arizona Democrats face and hope to acquire the knowledge in turning Arizona blue or at the very least purple.
I hope to meet up with like-minded people in bettering Arizona.
It will be the first time in my life that I've actually gotten involved and active politically.
I believe in equal rights for all.

I'm excited by NN15 coming to Phoenix, Arizona because we need help.

I respect those who are taking a stand against Phoenix and Arizona by boycotting my state, and I ask that my fellow Democrats, Liberals and Progressives respect my decision to join in the fight against racist bigotry.

Thank you.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve suffered from cold sores, also known as Herpes Simplex 1, meaning fever blisters around the mouth, but I’m lucky I guess, because I also get them at my nose, inside my nose and have gotten outbreaks on my ear.

I do know that cold sore outbreaks can erupt from stress but they can also come out from you know, actually being sick, and there are times that they just appear for no reason at all. Sometimes I wonder if they could be allergy related.

As a small child, it didn’t seem to be all that big of a deal but as I grew older, they definitely have become a very big deal indeed.

Painful from Day 1 until the end, which usually takes 7 to 10 days for me.

One time in college when I was maybe 19, I went to our family doctor with a sore on my nose and painful swollen glands in my neck.

The doctor was alarmed because of my swollen glands and drew blood for tests and then he told me to place hot compresses on the oozing blisters on my nose to draw the infection out.

The blood work came back normal and there was no sign of an infection.

In 1985 following the death of my father, my bottom lip swelled up to the size of a small balloon and of course, I knew it was due to stress and grief. I went to a different doctor then; having moved to Arizona, and that doctor grimaced and told me that there was nothing he could do and I’d just have to tough it out. He gave the warnings about kissing and abstaining from oral sex so as not to spread it but really, who would feel like doing either of those things with a painful lip the size of a small balloon?

That was the worst outbreak that I’ve ever experienced, thank goodness.

I’ve had outbreaks come on and then heal, only to have another outbreak come on and heal, and right when I thought it was done, two more outbreaks right after another flared up.

Never could figure out what was up with that but it was horrible.

I’ve tried everything from popping L-Lysine the minute the tingling started and popping them continuously, yet it didn’t stop or lessen the outbreak.

I’ve tried rubbing raw garlic on the sores and all that did was cause more agony and made me smell funny.

I’ve dabbed hydrogen peroxide and had the sores bubble up, but it did nothing, nor did witch hazel.

An older woman advised me to have my cats lick the sores because that’s what they did in the ‘old country’ but there was no way that I was letting my cats near that.

Since the Internet, I’ve researched cures and there are some wild homeopathic cures out there that people actually believe in and swear they work, such as dabbing the blisters with nail polish remover! Or applying Preparation H. Okay, I did try that one, but it did nothing.

I’ve tried Abreva and other over-the-counter remedies and all to no avail.

I’ve become very knowledgeable about recognizing the very beginnings of an outbreak and for me it starts with an intense pain on my head and then within hours the pain travels to one of my eyes.

It feels as though my eye will pop right out of my head, because it is deep and intense, yet when I look in a mirror, there are no visible signs.

From my eye, it leads down my cheek, and it is such a deep, indescribable pain and when it reaches my cheek I start concentrating on my lips and nose, waiting for the tingling.

If I can catch the tingling early enough, I have had success with applying Neosporin all day long on the area and one time had success with an apricot scrub.

Usually though, I head to bed with a painful eye and cheek and then when I wake up and look in the mirror it’s “Yup, there it is!”

The glands in my neck swell up and become quite painful and they stay swollen and painful until around Day 7, but at least the eye and cheek pain are gone.

Recently I’ve discovered that taking aspirin helps with the glands and placing ice on the sores helps numb that pain.

They say, as you grow older that the outbreaks should become less and less, but so far, age has not made a difference for me and I’m in my late 50s.

So, my question for you is do you suffer from cold sores and if so, do you have any tricks or remedies that help?

Thank you for reading and thank you in advance for any advice!

President Obama spoke at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix about housing and the economy while hundreds protested outside.

Some of the shouts were:
 Don't be weak, pipelines leak!
Joe Arpaio for President!

And then things turned ugly with Obama supporters on the west side of the street and detractors across the street chanting:

Bye Bye Black Sheep!
Impeach the Half White Muslim!

Plus, these nice little tidbits when interviewed by the local media

Obama is ruining American values. He is ruining the Constitution. He needs to go back to where he came from because obviously, he is a liar,” she said. “I am not racist. I am part Indian. Obama’s half Black, half White.”

“He’s 47 percent Negro,” shouted Ron Enderle, a 77-year-old Chandler resident who said that he and his son served as Marines and his grandson is currently serving in the Marines.

Enderle criticized the president mishandling security at the U.S. Benghazi Embassy.

“My grandson is third generation Marine, and it bothers me to have this man as our commander in chief. I’m ashamed,” Enderle said.

George Zimmerman needs $120,000

by arizonablue

According to Zimmerman's lawyers, George Zimmerman is out of money with jury selection starting in twelve days.
The defense fund has less than $5000.00 and $20,000 in liabilities.
Approximately $400,000 had been raised since fundraising started early in the case, but apparently nearly all of that has been spent.
Mark O'Mara and Don West are supposedly working for free with unpaid interns and underpaid staff.
The lawyers are asking for another $120,000 to defend their client.
Zimmerman has spent approximately $67,500 from donations from January 1st through April 11, 2013 for his bond, living expenses and preparation for the case.
