I am so very tired of seeing these inaccurate commercials being run for the republican candidate for senate. Bob Strictland was governor of Ohio from 2007 to 2011. Who else was in office the first 2 years of Strickland’s term of office. That's right, George Bush, unarguably the worst president in modern history. I seem to recall that Bush put the economy in the tank during those years.
Governor Strictland, started to cut state spending. In January 2008 he ordered a 733 million reduction in state spending. Seeing that the Bush economy was tanking the country in September 2008, he ordered another 540 million in state spending.
Now you see he did not order a tax increase like republicans like to charge the Democrats do all the time. He did however see the need for additional revenue so in 2009 he canceled the final year of a five-year income tax cut that had started in 2005 under the previous republican administration. This action took $844 million in tax refunds planned for Ohioans and instead gave it to the government to fill the budget gap.
Strickland's has been accused of draining the state's rainy day fund. Well, that is actually true. The state's rainy day fund was reduced from $1 billion to 89 cents in order to balance the state budget. Some estimates claim Ohio would have experienced a $7 billion deficit if Strickland hadn't made such moves and cuts to the Ohio budget.
All in all I see a man who being faced with the worst economy since the great depression of the 1930’s did his best to keep Ohio working and fiscally sound and I know if he gets the chance will make a great United States Senator.
