Jim Harbaugh is the new man in charge of the University of Michigan Football Team. Jim Harbaugh left the San Francisco 49ers and signed a 7 years, $35 millions base salary. His contract contains so many incentives, that could push the compensation up to about $40+ millions. You can read more about John's contract on this link.

The EXACT same day John Harbaugh was announced, Governor Snyder signed into law a bill that will make it illegal for students at public Universities in Michigan to join Unions. The Michigan Legislature passed the law, formerly House Bill 6074, during the "lame-duck" session, which ended on Dec. 19. Rep. Al Pscholka, R-Stevensville, introduced the bill in early December.

I have nothing against Jim Harbaugh making all the money he can get. However, I'm one of those who believe that College Athletics is just another of exploitation of free labour. I understand the argument that students are getting an scholarship. However, they are the ones who generate billions for corporations, they are the ones who put their livelihood on the line. They are the ones who risk injuries, damages to their bodies and brains, ...etc. But they have nothing to say about the money generated.

I'm not a constitutional scholar, but something has been bothering me seriously lately and I believe this should be a serious concern for all Democrats and all Americans.

Republicans have not only been winning seats in the House and the Senate, but they have been winning and maintaining Governorships throughout the country. They have also been maintaining or building on their majorities in the state houses and senates. And given the facts that Democrats seems to have really given up on Mid-Term elections all together, many Midwestern(WI, IL, IA, MI), North-Eastern(MA, ME, NJ,MD) and Western states (NV)  now have not only elected Republican Governors, but they have re-elected them. Because of Republican Gerrymandering, we all know that Democrats have NO way of winning Southern States anytime soon, furthermore, any states that hold elections in Mid-term years have NO chance of going Democratic, except maybe a handful like Oregon, California, Washington.

Reliability of voters is what matters

by bepanda

I have read plenty of analysis and read plenty of comments.
Lots of people focus on Candidates, Message, ... etc.
Yes, those matter ... to some degree. But , I have been thinking about the last few elections since I have been voting (2004) and to me, it comes down to one think: The reliability of the voters.

If your voters are reliable, It doesn't matter what you sell them, they will vote for you.

Read this news last night and couldn't believe it. But it seems to be true that Fox News owner and Media Mogul Rupert Murdoch has made an audacious offer to purchase Time Warner Inc for $80 Billions.
Time Warner Inc has been for sale for a while and the last bidder offered about $45billions (Comcast, which owns NBC family of networks).

Time Warner is the parent of CNN, which was originally created by Ted Turner.

This is going to be a very short diary, as I only thought about writing one as I was about to leave the house to vote this morning. But it is an important one, given where our country is today.
Today is election day in many municipalities in NC. These are mostly local election of municipalities that conduct non-partisan elections with a possible runoff . But the term "Non-Partisan" can be very misleading. Many of the candidates have one political preference over another. Many of the people we are electing have one view or another about the critical issues the country faces: Affordable Healthcare, Government Shutdown, Education, etc. And many of these candidates have been endorsed by various parties. Find the ones that are close to your convictions and make sure you take the time to vote for them.

Another day, another "Turn back the clock" in North Carolina.
This time, the target of the Republican dominated Assembly: Renewable Energy. This is happening through House Bill 298 (HB298), introduced in mid-March 2013.

Here is how the bill was introduced:
AN ACT TO REDUCE THE BURDEN OF HIGH ENERGY COSTS ON THE CITIZENS OF
NORTH CAROLINA BY ELIMINATING RENEWABLE ENERGY PORTFOLIO STANDARDS.

The sponsors:  Mike Hager (R) of Burke, Rutherford.

The year 2008 seems to be so far away for progressives in North Carolina. Obama won the State, Kay Hagan defeated Elizabeth Dole to take over the Senate Seat of Jesse Helm, Beverly Purdue became the first female Governor of North Carolina, ... etc.  North Carolina was on the verge of becoming a true swing state in the Deep South.
Then came 2010. Voters stayed home and the Republicans took over the Senate in NC and gerrymandered the state so badly, the dominance of Republicans in both the state house and senate are almost. In 2012, Republican Governor took control in Raleigh, therefore unleashing the full force of Right Wing politics in North Carolina.
We are not even 3 months into the reign of the Republicans over North Carolina, but every new bill introduced by Republicans just leave us speechless.
The latest House Bill? House Bill 494.

House Bill 494, filed by Republican Rowan County Reps. Harry Warren and Carl Ford, would refuse to acknowledge the force of any judicial ruling on prayer in North Carolina – or indeed on any Constitutional topic.
Eleven House Republicans have signed on to sponsor the resolution, including Majority Leader Edgar Starnes, R-Caldwell, and Budget Chairman Justin Burr, R-Stanly.

Following the results of the 2012 Elections, the beautiful state of North Carolina is now being run by a Republican Governor, a Republican Senate and a Republican House. It is the first time this has happened in recent history of North Carolina.
With all branches of Government now in the hands of the Right Wing, the Southernization of North Carolina is now on the fast track. Lots of diaries have already reported on the changing face of North Carolina. Here are a few links about what's happening in North Carolina ... The Scaling back of Early Voting, The ideas of closing of some UNC Campuses, the 2 years waiting period on Divorce (from 1), the elimination of the Hispanic Outreach office, ... etc

What transpired this week in the NC Government is therefore not surprising.
The Confederate battle flag made its appearance in the old NC State Capitol and with the blessing of Governor Pat McCrory, the flag was expected to be around until 2015 ... the 150th anniversary of the arrival of federal troops in Raleigh.

As we are all preparing to watch the Biggest sporting event in the USA, we need to remind ourselves that the NFL (National Football League) actually operates as a 501(c)6 non-profit association and has operated that way since the 1960s. Last year alone, the NFL made about $1 billions in profit.

The definition of a 501(c)6 as given by the IRS is as follows:

IRC 501(c)(6) provides for exemption of business leagues, chambers of commerce, real estate boards, boards of trade, and professional football leagues… which are not organized for profit and no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual.

As has been reported here since November, Republicans will be in charge of NC starting January 05th, 2013. Governor Elect Pat McCrory, the former Mayor of Charlotte will take over in Raleigh, the state capital.

Pat McCrory announced the direction of his administration on Thursday, when he  introduced Art Pope as the new deputy budget directory for the State. According to the NC Constitution, the Governor is the Director of the State Budget. But, it is clear, Art Pope will be the man in Charge.

The current transition administration of Pat McCrory is led by right winger and Pope Civitas Institute Thomas Stith. The Civitas Institute is entirely funded by Pope's foundation.

Who is Art Pope? What is his agenda? Follow me below ...

Rupert Murdoch has expanded his network into the NY Yankees Organization by acquiring 49% of the YES network. I don't live in the NY area and therefore I'm not sure what type of influence this sports channel might have on other people political opinions. But I always hate to see this man take over more and more of the news media (like he did in England) and spew his hate to more and more people in America.
I still remember how he purchased the parent of the WSJ and turned it into a mouth piece of the Republican party.
I don't know the politics of the Steibrenner family and the NY Yankees, but I think this is sad news for the American Sports fans all over the country, but especially in Blue State NY.

(Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp (NWSA) is expected to announce this week that it will acquire a 49 stake in the YES Network from the New York Yankees baseball team and its partners, in a deal that would value the sports channel at $3 billion, a person with knowledge of the talks told Reuters.

The deal is structured to allow News Corp to eventually acquire control of the channel, which broadcasts Yankees baseball and Brooklyn Nets basketball games to 15 million subscribers, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced.

I'm not an historian and I can't really claim to be very knowledgeable about American History and the struggles for Civil Rights in America.
A friend posted this on his Facebook page and it really caught my eyes that 160+ years later, this political picture of America hasn't changed much?

I think this picture goes without many words.  In certain parts of America, there is still plenty of work to do.

Even for some of the states that have gone from Red or Orange to Blue (VA, FL, CO, NV), the margin of victory is so thin, it could have gone either way.  Indiana is one of the few state that has gone from Blue to Red. IN and NC flirted with blue in 2008, but have now moved back to Red in 2012.
