I do not own guns anymore, but when i did, they were ALL post-1994 Clinton assault weapons/hi capacity magazine "ban" passed in September of a midterm election year! (what even Bill said was stupid and lost them the House and Senate. Not HillaryCare or his budget, but the gun bill lost a shitload of rural seats...but a national tragedy hadn't occurred prior).
Frank Lautenberg in the Senate and Carolyn McCarthy in the House are BOTH proposing limitations on high capacity gun magazines. And people are VERY falsely assuming that that gunman could NOT have had a 30 round mag IF the assault weapons ban hadn't expired in 2004 under the odious W.
Most of you know by now my diary bemoaning Rep. Giffords' voting against Nancy Pelosi has been taken by the far right to preemptively protect themselves when it is inevitably found out that the perps against Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords are tied to the far right and even perhaps (not saying this definitively) to the Jesse Kelly campaign or simply some of his disgruntled sour grapes supporters. I was not happy with MY congresswoman feeding into the then emerging media narrative at the time (not anymore because the shooting has overshadowed everything), that NINETEEN fellow Dems voted against former Speaker Nancy Pelosi as our leader in the House. At the time of the vote for leader, Giffords voted for Rep. Lewis, whom I admire deeply. However, the media of course spun ALL 19 votes against Pelosi as disgruntled Democrats who voted against her because Pelosi was too far to the Left. Giffords herself told me how much she admires Nancy Pelosi.
I just HAD to create a diary in response to the thread by Kos vis-a-vis the major demographic changes in many red and purple states largely driven by the growth in the latino population. There is a HUGE mistaken (and offensive to label them as such, I might add) belief that Hispanics can be "had" by appealing to their Catholic roots and ASSUMED social conservatism. I have credibility in this issue because I was a Republican at one time and tried in vain to unseat Rep. Ed Pastor simply by appealing to the supposed social conservatism of Latinos. I worked for an idiot Mexican-American rightwinger who ran for Congress in the 1990s. And all she did was preach social issues to Latin voters from the rooftops. Well, it didn't work.
EDIT NOTE: I initially deleted this diary out of sensitivity to the victims of Saturday's Tucson shooting, including my Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, who is now courageously fighting for her life at UMC. I undeleted because this has been twisted and distorted by not only the right wing blogs, but also the mainstream media as an example of a vitriolic statement from the progressives that is somehow the equal of what Sarah Palin, Sharron Angle, Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, Boortz, and other far-right stokers of vitriol, anger, and hatred have said and written. Which I believe can and does influence people, especially the already unstable to carry out acts of violence...perhaps even the exact shooting in Tucson on Saturday.
I am from the Tucson area and live in Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords' district. I worked like a dog for her elections when she was in the Arizona House, surrounded by rightwing nutcases. When Arizona re-districted in 2002, a seat opened up and she was right smack in the middle of it. So was I because I live in Oro Valley, Arizona, which is at the heart of that - then - new CD. I was one of several people to talk her into running and pledging complete loyalty and pledging to raise as much money as possible for her.
Sorry for the short diary and i have indeed asked this same question in numerous openthreads but never got an adequate reply to the question. I won't give to the DNC, DSCC, or DCCC for obvious reasons. I don't want my money to go to morons like Blanche Lincoln. I need a group who is dedicated to giving money to good Democrats.
that he is already rallying members of the progressive caucus to kill the health care "compromise". I, for one am happy about it. Check out my comments for the veracity of my relationship with the Statesman from Arizona, Representative Raul Grijalva.
I have typed out a verbatim version of a letter that was sent to all nurses in one of Arizona's largest hospitals - one of which, just like the letter states, is "the only game in town." In other words, it's the only hospital for possible nursing employment for at least 180 miles. Thus, these nurses - thousands - have been intimidated by their union-busting management to NOT even think about joining a union, or, for them the nightmare scenario - become affiliated with the California Nurse's Association!
Here's the letter sent to all nurses at the Yuma (Arizona) Regional Medical Center:
I have had the misfortune of calling ALL the senators' offices today who are "members" of that vile "Gang of 15". And we MUST be getting to them, so keep it up! All of then were VERY rude to me except for - ironically - Evan Bayh's office. I am fortunate enough to have had the resources to contribute rather heavily to many many Democratic candidates and incumbents throughout the last few cycles.
Senator Claire McCaskill's office was the most rude senatorial office I have EVER called. I gave her a grand in 2006. Yes, you cannot, and should not, be able to buy a senator. But I am sure if I was a registered lobbyist employed by a healthcare company, that grand would have gone a HELL of a lot further.
You know, I am happily married to a man in Massachusetts for the past three years. In fact, we moved here from a red state for the equality this state affords us.
And I for one, feel we are all in this together. Whether one wants full equality in Massachusetts or CA or any other state. So, even though MY marriage wasn't threatened, I decided that we are all in this fight together and my husband and I decided to send a lot of money - money we don't really have - in order to help our gay brothers and sisters across the continent from us to assist them in their march for the full equality me and my spouse now enjoy.
So we gave. And gave. And gave some more. I personally believe that the apparent defeat in California sets us back as a movement FAR more than it would any other state because California has a heretofore well-deserved reputation as a trend-setter and a bellwether and an example for what the rest of the country may follow.
Is Obama gonna carry Missouri? FL? WV even?
I think it might be time for us Dailykos political geeks and monsters out there to put out links of predictions of what the map will look like on November 4th. This is a prediction thread. I got the idea because where I worl there's an office pool on not only which states will go red and which ones will go blue, but by what MARGINS! Ooooh that's a tough one. They are doing one today with a rather complicated point system and anothe on the 29th when things look a lot more predictable by then. In fact, they're giving more money on the one put out by the close of today because, logically, it's much harder this far out. But, c'mon, for us political geeks, this really is NOT too far out.
Folks, it's VERY late in the game. Voting actually begins October 1st! We on the Left need to get with the program and realize that we don't have an "election day" in the US, when half the states begin voting in earnest on October 1, 2008.
BUT WE STILL HAVEN'T DEFINED JOHN MCCAIN NEGATIVELY. FORGET ABOUT PALIN AND HER ANNOYING-VOICE
McCain and his people like Mike Salter, KNOW that election "DAY" really isn't election "day" in over half the country. Mummy McCain hails from the state of Arizona that, with all its flaws has a mature, very progressive election system and allows early voting (for many many years), clean elections, and even public funding for state elections. Thus, McCain's campaign has PERFECTED "early voting programs". They have had to. There's no way they couldn't have, running in that state all these years. I am not quite sure that Obama's team is that gung-ho on the early voting thing. Or that many people on his team even understand it. But Obama's team, or someone ON their team (who they actually listen to) HAD BETTER BE:
Here is the very first ad from a pro-Democratic group called Progressive Media USA.
It just came out today. It's a limited buy, since they don't have the MILLIONS they had in 2004, when they were the biggest and baddest ass 527 kicking repug ass.
Scroll to see the ad and see what you think of the ad? Do you like it? It wasa very limited ad buy, but, do you think it's good enough to warrant sending them a check? And maybe grade their ad from A-F.
FTR, I'd give it a B-
