I'm an atheist.

by cai

I don't think I lack humanity.

You may not know I'm an atheist, because it only comes up in discussions around atheism.  Most of the time, it's simply irrelevant.  I am a "weak atheist" -- not agnostic or unsure or convertible, just lacking any belief in any deities.  I lack belief in the Abrahamic god the same way most Christians lack belief in non-Christian gods (Freya, Athena, Shiva).  That is, without spending any time or energy disbelieving.

If you remember talking to me at all, please remember that I am not the stereotype you may think I am.

I don't always agree with the person who said atheists lacked humanity, but I never thought he'd express such contempt for me as a human being.

"Every time you see me, you wanna mess with me.  I'm tired of it.  It stops today."
That's what Eric Garner said to police officers questioning him yesterday on the streets of New York City.

It turns out he was right.  The NYPD will not be bothering him again.

That's because, yesterday, he died.

An NYPD officer put him in a choke hold, and he died.  WARNING: VIDEO OF A MAN'S DEATH.

8:30pm update: I said below that Jada's story was not uncommon.  Now it turns out even her particular story may be shared with another victim.  The perpetrators may have done the same thing to other girls.

Now, we come to find out, as of yesterday, in doing further investigation into this case, it's not just Jada. There are other young girls who they've been posting pictures online having sex with these young girls also who are comatose and obviously unconscious. And so the police now are putting out a call to identify who are all these young girls who these videos and pictures by these alleged perpetrators are out there online and they're having sex with these girls who are obviously unconscious.
They allegedly raped a friend of Jada's in the same manner at the same party.

Brava, Jada.

Jada decided to share her name and her story with the press because she has nothing to hide anymore. “Everybody has already seen my face and my body,” she said, “but that’s not what I am and who I am.”
Content warnings: rape, victim-blaming, sharing of photos of aftermath of assault on social media, misogynistic language.

Dear ammosexuals,

by cai

As a non-ammosexual who has only recently become aware of your existence, I admit that I have been unnerved and put off by your orientation.  Especially by the large numbers of you coming out publicly and demanding your rights.

I felt this was somewhat justified by the fact that ammunition, unlike lacy underthings, motorcycles, smartphones, and other inanimate objects people might be aroused by, has a primary purpose of killing people.  People which might include me.  I didn't think that your sexual orientation was compatible with people being safe in their homes, communities, and schools.

I was, in short, ammophobic.

I have seen the error of my ways.

Actually sick, like my dinner might return on me.

Thanks, George Will.

TRIGGER WARNING for... I don't even know what to call it.  Sexual assault denial and minimization, insulting actual survivors, and turning colleges into victims.

Also ageism, and trivialization of trauma, and generally being a horrible human being.

I urge everyone to watch this video.

by cai

It's by Laci Green, and it's called: "Elliot Rodger: More Than A Madman".  She tackles the topic with humor, anger, and insight.

[direct link]

She talks about her own experience with stalking and threats from a "friend" she refused to date, and then moves on Elliot Rodger and how his actions exist on a continuum of "not all... but way too fucking many" men who "feel entitled... to women's bodies and to their time."

Even if you're talked out on this topic, or think you already know this stuff, it's worth watching.

More below the squiggle.

Some of the best of #yesallwomen

by cai

It began with a Muslim woman (who has since made her Twitter private) who said this:

Guys, I'm going to be tweeting under the #YesAllWomen hashtag. Let's discuss what "not all men" might do, but women must fear.
The tweets that followed were moving and to the point: (Do I?  Yes.  Several.)

More below the orange streusel.

Boko Haram releases video of 136 of the missing girls.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said the children would be held until all imprisoned militants had been freed.
Nigeria's interior minister says this demand is "absurd".

I am relieved that at least some of them are still together in one place, meaning they have friends with them.  I hope this means they have not been "sold" to "husbands".

Still, the offer to swap only applies to the non-Muslim girls, and they may be under pressure to convert...

Fat-phobia kills.

by cai

"I'm just worried about their health," you say to excuse anti-fat comments.  To which I say: "Fuck you."

However fit your ass is, you are talking out it.

Health?  Do you know what some people do to achieve and maintain a "healthy"-looking body?  Taking diet pills and diuretics, vomiting after meals, starving themselves, smoking cigarettes to avoid weight gain, over-exercising, paying endless money for diet meals, or limiting their diet to the point of malnutrition, for starters.

But it isn't them you're judging when you nobly spout about health.

I have removed my previous diary.

by cai

If you can get at the comments or recs of my diary naming Braveheart, PLEASE REMOVE RECS AND/OR HR.  Thank you.

Rich in PA informed me that Braveheart's father did not want her publicly named.

The father of an Indian woman who died after being gang raped on a Delhi bus has denied a British newspaper report that he wanted his daughter named.
I put forward that other diary because I believed it was what the murdered woman's family wanted.  Now I have deleted it for the same reason.
"I have only said we won't have any objection if the government uses my daughter's name for a new law for crime against women that is more stringent and better framed that the existing one," the Hindustan Times quoted him as saying.
I quoted the Daily Mirror because I had seen a similar report about the father's wishes (that he wanted it publicized, without naming the name) on BBC News.  I made a mistake, and I apologize.

"Rape = No Big Deal."

by cai

Don't auto-HR.  It's not me saying that.  I believe nothing of the sort.

I believe rape is a horrendous crime, that stranger rape and date rape and spousal rape and child rape and gang rape and "taking advantage" of an intoxicated person are all wrong, despicable, vile, rape-rape.

I wish I had more company in that.

"Rape = No Big Deal" is an incredibly common belief.

Of course, recently rape as no big deal has been making international headlines as the policy of India's national government and local police.  But we cannot simply shake our heads at the backwardness of some distant Other.

"Rape = No Big Deal" is also the de facto position of today's Republican Party.

Her voice shakes.

You sense her very foundation has been shaken.

This isn't an actor, a newscaster, or a spokesperson.  She hasn't planned her words.  She doesn't know what she's going to do next, only knows she has to act.  She uses the word "bullshit," and then apologizes.

The anger in her voice seems directed mainly at herself.  She'd persuaded "every person [she] know[s]" not to believe in the reality of global warming.  Now she has to change their minds.

Full transcript after the little orange cumulus.  Because in this case, partial just won't do.
