My Letter to Speaker Boehner

by chipoliwog

OFA asked me to write a letter for their delivery to the Speaker. Here's what I said...

Dear Speaker Boehner,

Your pursuit of a "lawsuit" against the President of the United States is foolhardy, a waste of time and my tax dollars.  Further, just this week, another zealous US Senator attempted to sue the President and that suit was summarily dismissed for lack of standing.  What makes you think the result of your suit will be any different?

You occupy an office that is central to the functioning of our government and you are third in line of succession to the Presidency should tragedy befall this nation. The citizens of this nation expect better of you in the performance of your duties.  Yet, what I see, is a series of Quixotic legislative votes that have zero chance of becoming law, that go against what a majority of this country's voters have approved and yet you continue on that path.  I ask you to just STOP.

I urge you to reign in your caucus and get to the business of government including WORKING with this President rather than calling him names.

The Truth Will Set You Free! (nope!)

by chipoliwog

I wrote this as a comment some months ago, but I thought it merited a diary

We've been told time and time again

How to talk to people about important things. But Democrats and Progressives just simply can't or won't get with the program.

Linguist George Lakoff has written book after book about how liberals and conservatives think and how to talk to them. But progressives hang on the MISTAKEN belief that "the truth will set you free" and that it stands on its own.

No, you have to fight for it. You have to speak to the values and fears of the group that you want to influence.  You have to understand what is causing people to hold to a line of thinking and belief in the face of incontrovertible evidence.

Please Freep this poll on ACA

by chipoliwog

A Seattle television station has posted a poll whose questions seem to be designed to cast doubt on the efficacy of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) given the short amount of time that the open enrollment period has been opened.

Please help short circuit this obvious false equivalence attack on Obamacare by weighing in on this poll.

In a highly read article on Bloomberg Seattle Venture Capitalist Nick Hanauer along with his co-author Eric Liu have written a provocative article comparing Radical Libertarianism and Communism as being two sides of the same extreme coin. In their article: Libertarians Are the New Communists  they state:

Most people would consider radical libertarianism and communism polar opposites: The first glorifies personal freedom. The second would obliterate it. Yet the ideologies are simply mirror images. Both attempt to answer the same questions, and fail to do so in similar ways. Where communism was adopted, the result was misery, poverty and tyranny. If extremist libertarians ever translated their beliefs into policy, it would lead to the same kinds of catastrophe.
This is a groundbreaking essay and I hope the start of taking back the conversation from Fox news and general media who carry water for the neo-cons.

Last month, the is reported that Seattle based Fisher Broadcasting, an institution that was one of the original pioneers of broadcasting in Seattle is being sold to Ultra Conservative Sinclair Broadcasting group. This is the very same group that controls access to media for over 29% of Americans and regularly spews conservative viewpoints and had the gall to broadcast an anti-Kerry film during the 2004 election cycle.

This is alarming because TV and Radio still hold significant sway in setting people's perceptions and political views.

Seattle's native son and rapper extraordinaire, Macklemore along with his creative partner Ryan Lewis today released the video of to their homage to Marriage Equality SameLove.

The song was released in support of Referendum 74 which will affirm marriage equality for all couples in Washington State.

I've diaried about this song back in July when it was released.  The music is powerful and emotional.  The video, simply brought me to tears.  Please enjoy and if able, please do what you can from where ever you are to help ensure this measure passes.

Please visit Washington United for Marriage to show your support.

Love is Patient, Love is Kind

by chipoliwog

In the face of the horrific news from Colorado today, I wanted to offer this diary as a counterpoint with the simple idea that Love is Patient and Love is Kind.  These words from the Bible (1Cor 13:4-7).  The full quote is:

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
I was reminded of this passage while listening to an absolutely beautiful and stunning song released this week by a hip hop artist from Seattle.  The song is called SAMELOVE and as you might surmise was about the subject of marriage equality.  Follow over the fold to be introduced to this beautiful soul and his music and I'll explore why the adage is relevant as a perspective on the carnage we heard about today. It is not about discussing the carnage but resetting our minds and spirits towards the necessary conditions for peace.

Washington Gubernatorial Debate

by chipoliwog

The 2 "leading" candidates for Governor in Washington state held a debate in Spokane Washington this evening.  The Democratic candidate Jay Inslee I felt did rather well against his opponent - Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna.

Here's the video: (Sorry it won't embed)

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer news site, the Public School Employees (an affiliate of SEIU) has endorsed REPUBLICAN Gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna.  The union which represents 26,000 public school employees across the state gives this Scott Walker wannabe a key endorsement in his bid to succeed Democrat Chris Gregiore in the Governor's mansion.

This is totally unacceptable, myopic and stupid on the part of this union.  How can anyone look at what Republicans have done in the states where they've gained power and think that they would do anything different in this state?

Ya, so you're not happy that Democrats haven't been able to fully fund education in an environment where they can't secure the revenue needed to fully fund a government.  Well boo, fucken hoo. Get real. This time next year, you're going to be faced with massive layoffs, and the banning of your union.  You stupid fucks!  What the hell do you think you gain from supporting such a fascist?

update: It's been pointed out in the comments that this is not actually a "Teachers" union but a union for school administrators and staff. I've adjusted the title accordingly but the effect is the same.  This Union is selling themselves AND US out.

The very funny duo of Key and Peele from Comedy Central did a video depicting President Obama's relationship with the GOP and laid bare the essential truth that the President used the Republican's greed and myopic quest for power against them.  It was stunning and it became a big hit here in the progressive blogsphere.

But for some reason, that video has now been scrubbed from Youtube and from Comedy Central. This is bad.  I have used this video on a number of occasions to blow up the meme that Obama is naive and dumb and has instead outmaneuvered the GOP with their own greed and hubris.

All we have left is a video of the video on a TV.  (you can see it over the croissant.)

The State of Washington in 2007 adopted rules requiring pharmacists to provide access to legal prescriptions to all who request them and prohibited pharmacists from discriminating in the provision of services and products.  This was to circumvent individual pharmacists or companies from objecting to the provision of prescriptions for the RU-486 or Plan B drugs designed as "emergency contraception".

But today, Federal Judge Ronald Leighton ruled that pharmacists are not required to dispense a medication they feel is at odd with their personal religious beliefs and that Washington State's requirement for them to do so is an infringement of their rights.

It should be noted that this decision is actually a "remanded" case from the Ninth Circuit that told him his original 2008 ruling on this matter was incorrect.  This Judge then held an 11 day hearing but came up with this ruling based on supposed business exemptions that pharmacies can choose to not stock drugs such as paperwork, supply availability, cost etc.

What I think is going to happen is this is going to be appealed (AGAIN) to the Ninth Circuit and they are going to blast this ruling out.  But, I would suspect the conservatives are setting up a test case for SCOTUS.

On a side note, legislation is pending in Washington's legislature that would require those hospitals and medical facilities and insurance plans that offer maternity services to also offer access to abortion services.

Update Thanks for the Rec listing.

Rick Santorum's campaign has unleashed an attack ad on Mitt Romney. OK, that part's not particularly surprising or noteworthy.  But! It's un-intentionally funny in the device that is used.  So, Watch the ad and be careful not to get splattered!
