The cops claim that on the night of August 17th, 1992, 11 year old Holly Staker invited eighteen year old Juan Rivera to her home (where she was baby sitting 2 kids) to have sex with him.

They also claim that when he failed to "perform" in bed, she made fun of him. This, according to the claim, enraged him so much so that he got a kitchen knife and stabbed her to death.

All they have for proof is a confession after four days of questioning. The questioning wasn't video taped (according to the cops, at the request of Juan Rivera), and the cops have "lost" the notes they kept during his questioning.

Juan Rivera has an IQ of 79 and claims to have no recollection of the crime.

So the only evidence convicting him is a signature that he put on a typed confession, that and the testimony of four retired cops.

The evidence of his innocence is overwhelming.

He was convicted in his 3rd trial yesterday.

Even late into the evening yesterday, except for our blogs and social networking tools, none of the old media (except CQ Politics) was covering this amazing story

However, it is now appearing in more and more outlets -- all within the last few hours.

I would think this would lead to some arrests and at a minimum an investigation of complicit democrats, Bush Department of Justice officials,  and greater scrutiny of AIPAC itself.

atheists versus believers

Disclaimer: I'm not Christian

I was dismayed to see a diary on the rec list mocking the concept of the virgin birth of Jesus. The central "joke" in the diarywas that Mary was really just having extra-marital sex. 90% of the commenters were yukking it up. . . . essentially saying how foolish people who believe in this story are. The author kept insisting that he wasn't really trying to offend anyone -- and that his wife and some of his kids are Christian.

I will try to give a few reasons why, in my view, the author of this diary, and his supporters made a mistake.

I am sorry for the length, but this whole episode made me very mad, and I want to explain why.

Recently Kos frontpaged this shocking story:

Muslim Children Gassed at Dayton Mosque After "Obsession" DVD Hits Ohio
by Chris Rodda
Sun Sep 28, 2008 at 08:50:29 PM PDT
(From the diaries -- kos)

On Friday, September 26, the end of a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West -- the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail -- were distributed by mail in Ohio, a "chemical irritant" was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service. The room that the chemical was sprayed into was the room where babies and children were being kept while their mothers were engaged in prayers. This, apparently, is what the scare tactic political campaigning of John McCain's supporters has led to -- Americans perpetrating a terrorist attack against innocent children on American soil.

US Army mission...to the US??

by daddy4mak

For the first time since the civil war, according to Democracy Now, the US Army will have a permanent mission in the US.

The "battlefield," if you will, will be our country.

Interestingly, this mission starts 4 weeks before Barack gets elected -- on October 1st.

i'm been a little surprised about how quiet Biden has been. Maybe he isn't being covered by the media as much--perhaps because they can't spare away any political reporters from covering the hourly scandals erupting from the republican VP candidate?

Anyways, I thought we'd help Joe Biden out by listing out really simple statements that he can use without seeming like a bullly--you do know, our republican "friends" are going to start calling him that the minute he says anything true about Mrs. Palin that doesn't put her in a positive light.

Here are the rules

  1. Don't be mean
  1. Tell the Truth
  1. Connect her to the last 8 years

So, join me below the fold. I'll update this diary as you come up with some good ones as well.

Remember how depressed we've been at times...Losing the battle for the Supreme Court (Roberts/Alito), all the defeats on Iraq war funding, the many FISA battles that we lost, the censure of MoveOn for the BetrayUs ad, and all the toothless oversight.

I think all this will pale in comparison to what is about to come our way.

We are, as a country, in great peril. I am depressed and need your help in cheering me up.

Feel Good about America

by daddy4mak

I've been depressed this week. Seeing inky99's post yesterday (Prisoners packed in icewater-filled garbage cans) about Abu Ghraib...and specially this picture (don't click if you don't want to cry)

The second thing that makes me depressed is that we are upon the fifth anniversary of one of the greatest follies of our nations history. Where we as a nation were complicit in attacking another country simply for because we were afraid (our politicians were afraid of losing oil security and some of us were just afraid of Saddam).

Easily over four thousand Americans have died. Surveys of morgues and scientific interviews suggest1.2 million Iraqis have died.

Why couldn't "we the people" stop our country from doing such evil?

I think I felt ashamed as an American.

It comes down to not enough people standing up for what is right. It always does. Human history shows us that the people who publicly stand up against injustice are always a minority.

So this video brought tears of joy...

this is a quick diary, I just saw it on the international version of CNN

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Sunday ordered 10 battalions of military forces to the country's border with Colombia, and ordered the closure of Venezuela's embassy in Colombia's capital city of Bogota.

Expect the financial markets to react negatively to this tomorrow. More choice quotes below the fold.
