Bill Clinton, in order to reach across the aisle, appointed Republican Louis Freeh to be the Director of the FBI. Freeh made life difficult for Bill Clinton in the lead up to the the fake impeachment crisis of 1998.
Barack Obama, in the same attempt to reach across the partisan divide, as was even more typical of his actions than Bill Clinton’s, chose a Republican to be head of the FBI. That Republican was Bill Comey, known for his loyalty to his country over his party, because of his actions stopping the overreach of the FISA warrants that Alberto Gonzalez tried to get a hospitalized John Ashcroft to sign while he was groggy from surgical drugs.
The Washington Post is reporting that starting tomorrow there are 4 people being interviewed for FBI Director.
Asst Director Andrew McCabe….the one who already contradicted Trump in public. HArd to imagine Trump taking kindly to that.
The other 3 are Republicans,
Sen. John Cornyn...who thinks it’s a bad rumor that Trump fired Comey over that phony Russia investigation. A rumor Donald Trump turned into the truth.
Michael Garcia, a Republican on the NY State Court of Appeals
Alice Fisher, formerly of the DOJ Criminal Unit who had some “issues” around Guantanamo.
I am baffled why, given the ridiculous obeisance Republicans have to their party and their leaders, over adherence for concerns to small d democratic norms that our side doesn’t push for Democrats.
We know of one Democrat that many, Republicans and Democrats, have universally recognized , to adhere to respect for the law above loyalty to a man or a party, is former US Attorney, Preet Bharara. He has prosecuted people without regard to party or position of authority.
We should be putting him forward for that position ...and even as the right person to be Special Prosecutor. ...if we get there.
Bit at the moment I can not imagine that someone of Bharara’s energy, rectitude and legal acumen would not be a great choice politically as well as be most welcome by FBI agents to be their leader.
