Long ago, when Hillary Clinton was determined to run for President, there was much discussion between her and her staff over what role (if any) former President Clinton could and should have in her campaign. The debate seemed to focus on three major factors:
- Bill Clinton's enormous popularity as an ex-President and the first Democratic President to serve two full terms since Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
- Mr. Clinton's often undisciplined comments in response to questions or situations he does not like or cannot control.
- The controversies surrounding the ex-President's conduct in the White House, primarily the scandal involving Monica Lewinsky.
I have long admired the Clinton Presidency and the ex-President himself. I remember voting in 1992 and FINALLY having the candidate I supported win the election. The feeling was pure elation! Not even a terrible storm on inauguration day 2003, which left Western Washington state without power for 4 days, could dampen my excitement and hope.
