I just had an idea, which may or may not work out.  I just wanted to get some feedback.  There has been much discussion on this site about the plight of minimum wage workers.  Many of us have donned the stereotypical liberal snob hat (guilty!) and have said that we would boycott any establishment, such as WalMart or McDonald's, who mistreats their workers.

Now it's the holiday season and many of us want to shop or eat at these questionable establishments (guilty!).  How do we reconcile our principles with our baser wants or needs? Please read about my idea beneath the squiggly orange serpent!!

I always suspected that Paul Solman, the economist contributor of PBS News Hour, was sympathetic to Republicans, but I never thought that he would drift into Obama hate territory until today.

Does Anyone Know Any Real Communists?

by fabucat

My original title for this diary was going to be: "Calling all Communists!", but I knew that this might be fodder for Bill O'Reilly and Roger Ailes, who think that this website is a regular Commie cyber-nest.  Which leads me to the subject of this diary:  I'm TOTALLY sick of mainstream conservatives and mainstream Republicans calling Obama and any Democrats Communists!

Oh, we could try to sit them down and explain to them the true meanings of words like Communism and socialism.  We could explain to conservatives that actually, Obama has done a lot of things to help Wall Street.  We could then hope that Republicans would see the light, and treat the President much nicer. Unfortunately, "Reason" isn't a dog who should be fighting in this fight, because he will lose.

Every day I think that the Republicans have sunk as low as they can, another candidate shocks and surprises me with how retrograde and radically reactionary s/he can be.

Meet Jim Russell, who I hope will be the worst of the worst of this year's Republican candidates.  Who IS this Jim Russell?  Does he hail from the hills of Alaska, OR the rural spaces of flyover country in Idaho OR North Dakota or the deep, deep, deep South?  Nope, Jim Russell resides in Hawthorne, New York, Westchester County, and he's running against longtime Democrat Nita Lowey.

I just heard a Muslim-American woman call into an NPR talk show.  She said that today's her birthday, but she and her family cannot go out and celebrate (she must wear a hijab or look very Middle Eastern), because some jerks will think that her family is celebrating 9/11.

As we enter our season of discontent and the liberal weenies and extreme progressives duke each other out when we should band together, it's helpful to understand what we are up against.  The weenies want to punish some of the more blunt among us, because we're saying mean stuff about the other side.  Extreme progressives are furious because they've just realized that Obama is a centrist Democrat (something that I've realized all along), and because the President hasn't handed out the liberal goodies the way they expected.  I'm going to be even more blunt and say that our rag-tag band of lefties, pragmatic Democrats and weenie liberals need to band together and fight what is nothing less than threats to our liberty.

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY, 8th District) gave an insightful interview about the recent spike in threats against her colleagues and her to the Canadian Broadcast Company (CBC).  Rep. Slaughter gave a synopsis of the ugly atmosphere that has developed since Congress began enacting health care reform last year.  What is most interesting about this interview, however, is that Ms. Slaughter recounted how one Congressman defended himself against a death threat from a constituent.

SICK OF REV. WRIGHT?

by fabucat

This really isn't about the Rev., pro or con. I guess that Rev. Wright is Obama's Swiftboat.  I'm sure that we've all reached the saturation point with regard to the good Rev.  I don't find anything Wright has said to be all that surprising, but I understand why people might be offended, blah, blah, blah, blah.  This means that we'll be hearing about Rev. Wright from now until November.  And if Obama is elected President, we could be hearing about Rev. Wright for five or even nine more years.  The good Rev. Wright (and Hillary's Excellent Bosnian Adventure) are why we aren't discussing the issues: Iraq, the foreclosure crisis, job outsourcing, etc., etc.  What are good liberals to do? Here are a few suggestions:

Who Needs Fox When We've Got NPR?

by fabucat

My hometown NPR station in DC is WAMU, which features a local reporting outfit known as the Capitol News Connection.  Who is behind it, I know not.  Every weekday morning, during 'Morning Edition,' WAMU includes CNC's 'Power Breakfast' which features a snotty, snarky guy, who sounds like a pimply teenager, named something like 'Todd Zoellick.' I think that this is WAMU's attempt to sound 'hip' and 'relevant' to 'them young people'.  Generally, Power Breakfast Todd's snarky comments generally are directed at Democrats and-- (a term which infuriates me) 'The Democrat Party.'  Young Todd must have been drinking Jack Daniels' shots with Mitch McConnell last night.  Todd baby was practically crowing about how the 'Democrat Congress had done nothing' in 2007 and how it will do less next year, since 2008 is an election year.

Christy Matthews had a panel discussion with some other blowhards tonight, Chuck Todd, undercover GOP establishment figure Howard Kurtz, and some dame from New York Magazine named Jennifer Senior.  This small establishment blowhards' convention wished out loud that some of the lower tier candidates would be kept of out the GOP and Democratic debates.  Senior went so far as to call Ron Paul a 'deadbeat' because this so-called minor candidate was getting free coverage by being included in the debates.  I tuned in during the middle of this East Coast establishment gabfest, which I assume was precipitated by Sen. Brownback's withdrawal from the Presidential sweepstakes.  No doubt this group of New York City and Washington, DC pundits wish for a subway series Presidential election starring Hilary and Rudy, and screw the rest of them.

I just heard about The Mr. Brown Show which emanates from Singapore.  Apparently these goofy folks, who put together a daily podcast, have gotten in trouble with Singapore authorities for their off-kilter satire.  Yet some of The Mr. Brown Show's podcasts have gotten downloads of 60,000 or more.
