I’ve always suspected that Republicans live in a different world. Mitt Romney’s recently revealed comments about the “other” 47% serve to reinforce that view. Now it seems that Republicans want to exist on the internet in their own separate .GOP domain.
The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) earlier this year filed an application for the top level domain “.GOP” with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Federal records indicate that the RSLC paid $185,000 to ICANN in application fees and $32,600 to Minds+Machines to manage the project for a total $217,600 speculative investment in what amounts to an online vanity plate. From the application:
An effort by Republicans to register voters with paid workers is underway in North Carolina and across the nation. In the past month various ads have appeared on Craigslist, Facebook and other online job listings offering amounts from $11 to $13 per hour (and in some cases internship credit) to help Republicans and Mitt Romney win in November by identifying conservatives and registering them as voters. The operation is linked to an Arizona company with a history of fraud allegations including the destruction of Democratic registration cards.
Yesterday I wrote about a clip in Scott Brown's "Let America be America" video about American small business actually being stock footage of a butcher in Dublin, Ireland. It turns out that two more clips in the video are also stock footage of small businesses in other countries. A scene, at the 0:32 mark, with what looks like a produce wholesaler was also shot in Dublin, Ireland. Another scene with a chef, at the 0:48 mark, was shot in Barcelona, Spain.
The latest Republican pile-on in response to Barack Obama's comments about small business is a 2-1/2 minute video from Senator Scott Brown that uses stock footage of American presidents and American entrepreneurship set to heroic music asking to Let America be America Again. In one scene, at the 1:05 mark, a butcher stands in front of his store, O'Connor's, a family butcher and local produce store, while the voice of Ronald Reagan says "like the owners of stores down the street". Except that it's not down the street. It isn't even in the country. It's a butcher shop in Dublin, Ireland that appears in stock footage from Getty Images. The clip information specifically says "Non US Location".
How stupid does the automobile industry think we are? A disengenuous little post appeared yesterday at BlueNC from "Auto Alliance" entitled "Keep Your Eyes On The Road" with a link to an industry video. I couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry.
Auto Alliance is the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. They "embraced 40% higher federal fuel standards in the 2007 energy bill" because they were opposed to higher CAFE standards to push fuel efficiency above 35 mpg and, before 2020. They have also fought against carbon controls and are actively lobbying for a national emissions standard because they want to weaken more stringent state laws like California's.
I won't link to the post because I don't want to give it Google juice. It's not quite astroturf because they have identified themselves, albeit with limited disclosure. It does amount to spam because the same post has appeared on over 20 progressive blogs I have been able to verify:
First Michele Bachmann, Robin Hayes and, Randy Kuhl. Now a State Senator, NC Republican Neal Hunt wallows in the mud.
NC Republican State Senator Neal Hunt, running for re-election and supporting John McCain on C-Span November 1st.
"I would like some, some, normal person that knew him growing up to come forward and say "I love America and, and eh, I really like Barack Obama" I just hadn't seen anybody like that. Everybody, all of his associations seem to be radical American haters."
Sarah Palin ran for Lieutenant Governor of Alaska in 2002 while still Mayor of Wasilla. She used town resources to begin her campaign. When she made her initial filing 2/8/2002, with the Alaska Public Offices Commission, she used a City of Wasilla email address email@example.com and the fax number 373-9096 for the City of Wasilla as her candidate/campaign contact information. When she filed a Form 8871 with the IRS as a Political Organization (Notice of Section 527 Status) she used another City of Wasilla email account firstname.lastname@example.org in her contact information.
Representative Patrick McHenry (R-NC) has written Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass), Chairman of the House Financial Services, seeking a hearing on the issue of individuals and organizations allegedly using non-profits to manipulate real estate and other markets.
Peace advocates meeting on the National Mall this Saturday will be met by counter-demonstrators organized by two NC men. Larry Bailey of Vets for Truth and BootMurtha.com and Ted Sampley of US Veteran Dispatch and multiple dubious pseudo-political ventures and, Rolling Thunder Motor Cycle Rally.
Ted Sampley of Kinston, the P.T. Barnum of Swiftboating, has created a bogus story that protesters will deface the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. It has spun from Sampley's website with an "Eagles" message board into an organized counter-offensive called "Gathering of Eagles". Many have bought into the BS, and message boards hint at physical conflict. Some suggest developing "limps" to justify canes as potential weapons. There is a way to fight back - peacefully. Read on and please take action before midnight Friday.
The fossilized blog page of North Carolina’s 9th District Congresswoman Sue Myrick is becoming a little treasure trove of information and a monument to Republican hypocrisy the longer it stays up. As I wrote in Sue Myrick’s Shrine to Ann Coulter, Sue Myrick’s blog started in March 2004 with a total of six entries with the 5th entry about an Ann Coulter fundraiser in April 2005.
The last entry on Myrick’s blog was an April 17, 2005 post about another fundraiser with country music singer Sara Evans:
Sue Myrick is offering an exclusive, one-time event to meet country music star Sara Evans backstage at the Alan Jackson - Sara Evans concert May 5th
Tickets to this very special event include a VIP backstage pass to meet and have your photo taken with Sara Evans, and a great seat to watch country music legend Alan Jackson live in concert.
By now you are aware that in an utterly surprising development, an employee of a firm hired by the Republicans to help with voter (suppression), ahem, registration, was arrested today GOP CONTRACTOR ...
