#boycottIndiana

by mamaeps

As this is trending high on Twitter, I felt the need to give the perspective from a Baltimore football loving mom.

#boycottIndiana: First they came for the Colts. Now the gays. Who's next?

Call me a sandwich (I love tuna on rye) as I recently hit the lunch menu with my parents. My dad is still working as a pharmacist at 82. My mom is 78 with issues like diabetes, atrial fib, IBS, and degenerate back disease. They are independent and into their "daily" routine. That was until two Tuesdays ago when my sister calls to tell me that mom's going by ambulance to the hospital due to chest pain. Welcome to the sandwich club indeed. (It was brought to my attention my analogy may be obscure. I am referring to the sandwich generation whom are pressed between taking care of aging parents and their own family. Hope that helps!)

Diagnosis: Student Debt

by mamaeps

The discussion around student debt & healthcare rarely seem to intersect. However, lurking under the radar is the fact that the amount of debt accrued by those trying to become doctors or dentists is putting a vast strain on the healthcare system as it is structured today. If the ancedotal trend we are seeing continues, small group & solo practices may go the way of the land line.

We are all Navigators

by mamaeps

I love the people on this website. It is a community that looks out for those that often can't or don't know how to get the services they need. With the advent of healthcare reform, the need for navigation of choppy waters is greater than ever. So, in order to steer clear of rocky shores, we need to do our part.

Chaos theory applied to shutdown

by mamaeps

Chaos is the science of surprises, of the nonlinear and the unpredictable. It teaches us to expect the unexpected. It would seem that Republicans in Congess need to study this concept so that the ripples spreading across the country due to the shutdown can finally resonate within them.

One sip at a time

by mamaeps

There's a saying that a man CAN eat a bear, if they just take one bite at a time. Likewise the Tea Party can be depleted, one sip at a time. I took a sip at the gym today, & it tasted great (& I hate tea).

Tales from the ER

by mamaeps

Reading the Republican response to healthcare, the common response is everyone has healthcare now; it's called the ER. I doubt that many of them have intersected with this seventh circle of hell. If they had, I don't think that they would look at the world through that kaleidoscope of craziness anymore. Please dip a toe into the ER world with me.

Jury Duty

by mamaeps

I am sitting with about 300 other citizens summoned to jury duty. I look around & am kinda happy. Everyone made an effort. Everyone is dressed nicely. Everyone seems nice.  Officials are most apologetic about causing us to come here. They let us use Internet. We get to keep our cell phones. We get to eat snacks. Have a lunch break. Free parking. They pay us.

I am happy. I am never picked but am always hopeful. Sorta like dodgeball in elementary school. I view this the same way as having the right to vote. It is my privilege because I live here. So I sit through the videos, the lectures, the instructions & I smile.

I have jury duty.

Punching back @ the Gym

by mamaeps

As I reported in an earlier diary, I work out at a gym every day, & use the same piece of cardio equipment for an hour. Since the last debate it seems I am a must stop for every right wing male in order to set me straight. However, they always seem taken aback when I not only don't cower but actively fight back. Today was over the top.

Line on early voting

by mamaeps

Early voting began in Maryland today. In between getting bottled water, looking for non existent generators, & stocking up on dry goods, we decided to try early voting. This way if things are still bad here on election day, we are good.
