there is no defense of marriage act

by mp

I had the privileged of watching the King5 TV forum for the candidates vying to occupy Jay Inslee's seat in Washington's First District this morning.

For the most part it was exactly what you would expect, little excitement and predictable answers.

But some things are just so amazing... its one thing to deny forces that are hard to see or understand, to question economic theories or even dietary choices.  It is something completely different to deny an existing and well publicized Federal Law exists...

Read what Darcy had to say about the experience from her perspective after the jump.

Match My Contribution to #WIUnion

by mp

Among those organizing on the ground are some friends of mine, guys and gals who have been around the block a few times and know from experience that we don't win these fights through magic, it takes hard work and perseverance. Hard work and perseverance requires food.

I sent two pizzas to the TAA offices for their 6:30 pm phone bank, where 25 volunteers will be manning the phones.  They have another phone bank at the Madison Labor Temple where another 25 volunteers will be lighting up the phone lines as well.  Who will match my contribution?

TAA offices - Attention: Ross @ 254 W. Gilman - Ian's Pizza will deliver @ 608-257-9248

Madison Labor Temple - Attention: Mitch @ 1602 S. Park St - best delivery unknown, Ian's wont -- Rocky Rococo's maybe? ORDER ONLINE AT ROCKYSMADISON.COM or (608) 251-0304 - no knowledge of their political leanings or union support.

If you are sending food, list what and where in the comments please!  If you can volunteer (from home) email VolunteerToDefendWisconsin@gmail.com

Cash donations can be sent to: AFSCME Wisconsin Action Center

Some Dirty Hippie gave me this info:
*Subway on the Square 608-255-1636 * NOTE: minimum order $100.00 They
have set up a fund there for your orders, and they are giving free food from
that fund to any union member or pro-union demonstrator who requests food.

Conventional Un-Wisdom: We lost because they beat us at Vote by Mail (or Early Voting), next year we will focus on closing the VBM (EV) gap.

This Un-Wisdom was heard in a number of states following the 2010 elections, often spoken by prominent establishment figures as part of recapping the 2010 elections and setting the agenda for 2012.  I can't know that they weren't just trying to put forward a positive tone coupled with an easily quantified and correctable problem.  What I do know is that this is a dangerous path to follow if we want to actually do better (which would include winning) in 2012.

Charlie Crist Can't Save Us Anymore

by mp

Things have been bad in Florida for quite some time now, a decade of Republican/Corporate control of the Legislature and Constitutional Offices have wreaked havoc on the state's economy and the citizens health and well being.  Last year, the Legislature made massive assaults on Women's rights and Education.  Thanks to his ambition for higher office (US Senate) and absolute soulless abandon, vetoed both measures amid great fanfare and celebration.

Now it's on us.  We cannot wait for a savior.  We must  ORGANIZE!

At the end of every campaign, you need to take the time to process and clean your data, thank your supporters and do a complete analysis on what was done, what worked and didn't, missed opportunities and missteps.  This of course doesn't happen as often or as well as it should. If you are thinking of running again (re-elect or re-challenge), it becomes an even more important process.

Far too often, the best candidates have their campaigns falter due to failures that occurred in the first stage of the campaign.  No one ever gave them the right understanding of fund raising, no lessons, no guides...

Conventional Un-Wisdom:  If a candidate has a strong profile, the correct issue positions and public speaking ability, they will attain institutional and establishment support.  Donations and support will flow from party organizations, unions and traditional donors.

Florida - Yes We Can, Make it Worse.

by mp

November 2nd, 2010 all of the strategic and tactical errors of the past several years came to a head with the resounding losses of Democrats up and down the ballot.  The Republicans now hold all statewide seats except Senator Bill Nelson's (up in 2012) and the largest Republican majorities ever in the State House and Senate.

But we don't allow this to hold us back, we know we can do better.  We can do better at losing, and it looks like we might just give it a hell of an effort.

Restoring Olbermann to MSNBC is a mistake

by mp

The effort to reinstate Keith Olbermann to his spot in MSNBC's lineup is impressive, but is that really good for the progressive movement's future?

Does it seem like a good idea to keep providing profits and authority to a network and corporation so clearly bent to supporting the other side?

Why not find some alternative in which Keith Olbermann's tremendous talent, intellect and charisma are channeled in to benefiting the progressive movement without the side effect of buckets full of profits to right wing overlords?

As promised, here is the complete breakdown of performance versus the democratic performance goals I had projected for the Florida Governors Race.  I will use the same sorting I used previously for the turnout breakdown, but I have adjusted the reference of the turnout – each county is reported by what percentage of expected turnout it experienced ie. Sumter is reported as 127.5%, or 27.5% over expected turnout.

This data should put to rest once and for all the notion that to win Florida statewide you need to be a moderate, it takes a progressive to drive up the vote in our base counties.  Three straight failures at the Governors office, all the same way.

Charts are linked, if you want the pretty layout with the charts in-text, you can read it here.

Throughout 2009, one of the most common speeches Alex Sink gave to Democratic audiences was the tale of her husband's campaign.  Without skipping a beat, without hearing her own logical failures, she then told us exactly how she was going to lose the 2010 campaign.

I'll recount the tale and provide some data after the fold...

So many people in and around campaigns are passionate about yard signs.  The claims of campaigns being won and lost due to yard signs, the supporters who beg, cry and scream about needing yard signs, the candidates who get massive "feel good ego inflation" from seeing their name on so many signs around the districts...

Conventional Un-Wisdom: To win this district, you need yard signs.
