Pumping Ivory, Clean and Sober

by mrpiano

                                               June 13th, 1990
It was probably, for most folks, another ordinary day.  It was a Wednesday ( I
remembered that, for some strange reason), a gallon of gas was about a buck and
a quarter,  Daddy Bush was president, and the #1 song on the pop charts was "It
Must Have Been Love" by somebody named 'Roxette'.  (I had to look that one up).
The stock market had just cracked 3000.  I was 33, and dying.

Pumping Ivory, Minnesota Edition

by mrpiano

Minnesota, it turns out, is a lovely (if not very warm) place.  I'm certainly not shivering now, being back in the Florida Panhandle and aglow with the thought that some upstart college professor could unseat our chicken-farmer representative from Chumuckla. You know, the one who asked why the dinosaurs went extinct if there weren't any cars around at the time.

So after a visit with my Mom and Pop in Columbus, I pointed my rental car (a stripped down Celica, with no cruise control) north towards the Gopher State.  I-65 to CHI, then I-94 through Milwaukee and up towards Minnesota.  (Chicago wasn't an issue at all midday, just a little slowdown on 'Da Ryan', but I was enjoying gawking at the skyline so no loss).  The wind farms became more frequent, the drivers more courteous, and I started feeling a curious sense of 'belonging', a thought quickly supplanted by a recollection from Geology 101 that this area was glaciated as recently as 10,000 years ago, and was still inhumanly cold 9 or 10 months a year.

Joplin Rags....all of them....

by mrpiano

I'm starting my project "The Complete Rags of Scott Joplin" this morning.  Engineer Dale Reigle has graciously allowed me to record at the WUWF studios, the piano is a Yamaha C-7, a real beauty.  There are 26 of these puppies, I'm hoping to have 5 in the can at days end.  I've noticed after years of playing these tunes I've managed to pick up some bad habits; I want the album to be 'note perfect' so the ragtime 'police' (busily gumming their authentic 1905 Worlds Fair waffle cones) don't send me tweets about missing a G# in the trio of 'Swipsey'.  More later...

Pumping Ivory-Firearms Edition

by mrpiano

The NRA is playing on the emotions and stupidity of easily manipulated people. The saps are buying weapons by the barrel full, (perhaps even forgoing that new tattoo, or a trip to the dentist) blissfully bleating their 2nd amendment 'right' to do so, while the gun and ammo (et. al.) manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank.  I'm probably mostly iritated because I didn't think of it first.
