During the past month, I've been slightly frustrated because the polling data from Rasmussen has shown Bush's approval in the upper 40's, down only a tick from before Katrina. While the polling data from other agencies has been encouraging, Rasmussen seemed to be indicating that Bush's approval hadn't really been affected.

The failures of the federal government's response to Katrina are obvious to everyone. The WH has come under substantial criticism from many directions, including from a media that was generally afraid to criticize the administration or call it on its bullshit. Given these realities, the GOP machine is going to have to try to shift blame, and I believe that this shift will be in three parts. Each part has some capacity to harm the Democrats, but if handled correctly, each attempt to shift blame could backfire and hurt the GOP instead.

I'd consider myself a political realist. I think that some folks on this site think that just blocking the Repubs for a few more years will give us the Trifecta and let us push the entire Democratic agenda through. Personally, I'd prefer to see what I could do now through bartering some important issues.
