I belong to St Andrews Presbyterian Church. We're a liberal protestant church, and I have been a member for 12 years. We're currently involved in a controversy because we allowed an avowed atheist to become a member of our church, and did not require that he "accept Jesus Christ as his personal savior", or similar language.
Robert Jensen, a Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, has presented a number of topics for discussion at our church over the years, after meeting our minister Jim Rigby at a Social Justice event. Jensen is a journalism professor and has written many articles and at least 2 books. After quite a bit of interaction with our minister, our church, and the participants at lectures and classes he has directed, he chose to become a member of our church.
He was exposed to religion as a child, and while in college, he lost his faith, and lost any belief in the idea that God exists. Even though that is still true - that he does not believe in God - he still wants to be a participating member of the mission of our church, and so became a member of St Andrews.
