Political humorist Art Buchwald has died in Washington at the age of 81.
An absolute fixture in American journalism and humor for over five decades, he was (imho) a pioneer in his subtle, good-natured way, paving the way for the future likes of John Stewart and Al Franken.
What was amazing about Buchwald was that, while he never passed up a chance for satire (and saved his best stuff for the likes of Nixon and Reagan), in my recollection he never seemed to engender ill will amongst his targets or the populace at large, much less make enemies. While every leftist political satirist can directly draw their lineage to his work, even my lifelong Republican late mother treasured his editorial page by-lines over the decades.
His work was definitely emblematic of a kinder, gentler time in the American political scene, but it doesn't make it any less funny or literate.
My first diary, so go gentle, but figured it was well worth noting and providing a place for commentary upon.
RIP, Artie.
