Over the past couple of days, I’ve been writing a lot about Lone Star Legal Aid down here in Houston. As I’ve mentioned in a previous diary named Please Help Those Who Help Others, Lone Star Legal Aid is the main legal aid organization in Houston, Port Arthur, Beaumont and many of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey this past week. One of their areas of legal expertise is disaster relief. Earlier this week their main office in Houston was severely damaged by a fire, and it will take at least three months before they will be able to move back into their office.
But Lone Star Legal Aid won’t let a hurricane and a fire keep them from helping people in need. Despite not having an office and despite some Lone Star employees suffering great personal loss at the hands of flooding, the attorneys and support staff from Lone Star have already been working tirelessly to offer legal assistance to survivors of Harvey at various shelters across the Houston area such as the George R Brown Convention Center and NRG Stadium. My wife, who is a managing attorney at Lone Star, spent her morning at the Convention Center answering legal questions and handing out information to people who were sheltered there, and she and the rest of Lone Star’s staff are going to keep helping until the job is done. Lone Star has also been providing much needed information to the Houston area community via their Facebook page Lone Star Legal Aid and their Twitter account @LStarLegal.
After the initial wave of potentially life-threatening problems recedes, Lone Star attorneys and their support staff are the ones who are there for the long-haul to help people who have long-term legal problems because that’s just what Lone Star does. That’s just who they are. They help people in need for as long as they’re in need.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I had the privilege of working there several years ago, as I mentioned before my wife works there now, and I have the true honor of counting many people who work there as my friends. So yes, this is definitely personal to me as a lawyer, as a Houstonian, but most importantly as someone who cares about the welfare of others.
So I leave you all with this simple request. Please take a look at Lone Star’s website and social media pages, see the good work they do, and then make a donation to help Lone Star out in its time of need so that these amazing people can get back to doing the even more amazing work of helping our fellow Texans and our community rebuild. Please help those who help others.
