Warning: the following is based on Internet buzz and therefore might or might not be on the level.
Today I was hanging around on Facebook, avoiding Daily Kos while also avoiding my actual work. Then this popped up from one of my feminist friends.
I Was One Of The Most Ardent Hillary Haters On The Planet--Until I Read Her Emails
The article begins with this disclaimer:
[This is a guest post from Anna Whitlock (not her real name) who has worked in online progressive politics for more than ten years and due to previous harassment – including someone publishing her child’s name and address – prefers not to use her real name until a Democratic nominee has been chosen.]
It’s those horrible Berniebros, isn’t it! Dang them to heck with their internet intimidation! I bet she's being SWATted right now!
I want to make it clear that for all I know, this article may be by an actual feminist who has received actual threats. The kind of threats posed by Men’s Rights Activists and Gamergaters, including SWATing, doxxing, rape threats and death threats leveled against Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian, and many other women guilty of nothing other than being a woman with an opinion on the Internet, are very real and deadly serious, which is why it is not cute to invoke them in political games.
Hmmm. Let’s see. Who owns Blue Nation Review now?
Sale Of Blue Nation Review Gives Clinton Camp Its Own Media Outlet
David Brock owns a controlling interest in Blue Nation Review.
Ohhhhh.
So we’re not actually saying that Berniebros have made this innocent woman fear for her life and those of her loved ones if she writes an article sympathetic to Hillary Clinton and posts it shortly before the Iowa caucuses, but we’re just saying, is all.
My friend is a wonderful person, but she doesn't have my level of Internet cynicism. She’s quick to exclaim in horror about X cosmetics company testing on cats, and it looks terrible, all those poor kitties splayed out, and she forwards it to every one she knows—only to find out later that it’s actually one of those massive Spay and Neuter Days sponsored by groups like FixNation, a cause I strongly support.
This thing is whizzing around social media like wildfire. I’m not sure if it’s on the level or not, but the timing and the players involved make me pretty suspicious that it isn’t. And if it isn’t, it’s an awful thing to do. If it IS on the level, I’d like to state that as a feminist and as a female Sanders supporter, I strongly condemn any Internet threats against anyone, and so, I am positive, does Bernie and his campaign.
I checked this on snopes.com and couldn’t find anything. Hillary Clinton has been accused on the Internet of so many absurd things that I don't want to add to the pile. On the other hand, I wouldn’t believe David Brock if he told me it was raining outside (which it is: Southern California is getting El Niño for real today). If anyone knows more about this, I would appreciate knowing the truth.
