Here are some pictures from today's GOTV efforts. Turnout for door knocking and telephone calling was excellent. Great work district coordinators! Plus the weather was fantastic - up to 68 degrees and feeling like the first day of summer. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for a great Election Day turnout for Barack Obama and the rest of the DFL ticket.

Sadly, we are already in a recession, and job losses are spreading across the states. Layoffs beget other layoffs, as the unemployed workers stop buying new houses, clothing, furniture, automobiles, appliances, dinners out, and so on down the line. Then those companies face cash flow shortages, and will in turn have to make layoffs to compensate.

Below the fold is a list of layoffs announced thus far in 2008. I'm sure this list is by far not complete.

Thanks to the Dump Michele Bachmann Blog for highlighting this. Among the statements made by the Strib:

The incident earlier this month when she went on MSNBC’s "Hardball" and accused Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama of possibly harboring "anti-America" beliefs and calling for the media to investigate her colleagues to see who was "pro-America or anti-America" just adds to the list of bizarre incidents and statements that undercut her credibility as a political leader.

Bachmann is a culture warrior for the far-right; clearly, that’s been her priority. This north-suburban district is hard hit by foreclosures and the economic downturn. It deserves a U.S. House representative who’s practical, focused and results-oriented: Elwyn Tinklenberg.

CNN reporting that Job losses were reported in 41 states and DC in September, more than double the number of states as the prior month.

CNN:

The widespread job losses are a sign of a recession, said Bob Brusca, an economist at Fact and Opinion Economics in New York.

U.S. Dept. of Labor:

Over the year, jobless rates were up in 47 states and the District of Columbia and down in 3 states. The national unemployment rate was un-changed in September at 6.1 percent but was up from 4.7 percent a year earlier.

Both major newspapers in Minnesota are running articles today (Sun., Oct. 19) about how Rep. Michele Bachmann's comments on MSNBC' Hardball with Chris Matthews triggered an avalanche of donations to Elwin Tinklenberg's campaign. The Minneapolis StarTribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press each cite $450,000 in donations made to Tinklenberg's campaign since Bachmann's comments about Sen. Barack Obama's "anti-American views." Bachmann's comments also called into question the patriotism of other members of Congress, by calling for a media investigation into whether members of Congress were pro- or anti-America.

In the StarTribune article, Daily Kos also drew a mention.

At Sen. McCain's rally in Lakeville, Minnesota, a woman told Sen. McCain in a somewhat confused manner that she was scared of Sen. Obama because he supposedly is "an Arab." In Lakeville, McCain Tamps Down Hostility (incls. picture) The statement was so erroneous that Sen. McCain himself had to correct her. The woman who made that statement is 75-year old Gayle Quinnell from Shakopee, Minnesota. So, just who is Gayle Quinnell? She is a volunteer for the McCain campaign in Burnsville, Minnesota, who regularly sends information of this kind out to hundreds of people chosen from the phone book. In fact, she got her information about Obama from another McCain office volunteer, who sent her a letter with lots of "bad" information. She also thinks Sen. Obama is a Muslim because even though he's a Christian (per a reporter's statement), "he's still got Muslim in him."

We are all too well aware that anyone who pushes the "status quo" too far in some people's eyes is at risk of extremests reacting violently. One need only point to Abraham Lincoln, John Kennedy, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. Now the McCain/Palin campaign is whipping crowds into a frenzy, falsely leading them to believe that Sen. Obama is associated with terrorists and other despicable comments. We all have to be very concerned about Sen. Obama's safety, when crowd members shout out things like "Kill him!" Below is the text of a message we all need to send to our Senators and Representatives, as well as a link to when you can find their addresses. We need to demand that the Secret Service do its job and take action. Please send your e-mails right now!

It is customary at the end of a president's term in office to hand out pardons to people who are alternatively viewed as either "deserving souls" or "personal cronies." But Bush is already handing out pardons now, and the election hasn't even taken place yet. Oh, but hang on there -- these aren't pardons for criminal acts. They are pardons for financial sins! If you have made stupid financial decisions in recent years that have put you or your company or family at risk, you should start lining up at the payment window. If you don't get in line soon, there won't be any money left to give out!

Sarah Palin’s opening salvo at the Republican National Convention was an impressive performance. Although heavy on snide and cynical remarks, Palin’s speech demonstrated unequivocally that she will be a force to be reckoned with in this election. Yet in her speech and in the days since, Palin has been caught repeatedly lying (e.g., "I said thanks but no thanks on that Bridge to Nowhere"), or at a minimum fudging the truth (e.g., "I put it on eBay," implying but not stating that she sold the state jet there). Even so, another little lie of hers has gone unnoticed – her lie about Alaska’s taxes.
