The other night Thom Hartman was filling in for Sam Seder on
Air America
and made a persuasive argument against the use of the term "war" to describe what is happening in Iraq. I agree with the general understanding that a "war" is what's happening when two identifiable, organized forces armed with lethal weapons engage in conflict, the object of which is to take and hold territory. That's not at all what is happening in Iraq. It seems to me that our soldiers, who are highly trained and skilled at "war," are instead being made to serve as police sent out searching for gangs of insurgents who are for the most part indistinguishable from the general population. At least until they pop up shooting, which makes defending themselves the primary mission of our soldiers. The "war" in Iraq ended a long, long time ago. What we have there now is nothing more than a post-war
occupation
. It's every bit as risky and lethal as a war, but that's
not
what it is.
