Here's why reason doesn't work in the battle to win pro-life voters.
In 2000 an old school friend and I engaged in a battle of emails. Each of us argued the validity of our political views. Each insisted that the other's candidate, although well dressed and equipped with a college degree, was an abomination. My friend's candidate, George W. Bush, won the election.
In 2004 we went through the same discussion all over again. This time I pointed out all the mistakes Bush had made during his first term. I offered news links and quotes. I made available a stack of evidence that no one could ignore--to no avail. My friend listened politely, and then cheerfully informed me that she had already voted by mail--for Bush.
This year, in light of the disasters wrought by eight years of Bush leadership, somehow, crazily, giddily, I believed my job would be easier. I have the best candidate to come along in decades, and he is not just smart; he is honorable, he shares my friend's basic religious principles, and he has the kind of active compassion a decent, law-abiding Christian can respect.
