I've spent a lot of time working to elect Democrats and, too often, been greatly dissapointed because they cut deals and sell out the people the very people who elected them. From voting for the Iraq war, to FISA, to DOMA, to NAFTA, to not aggressively fighting for economic justice, to not passing universal health care, to whatever the most recent more minor travesty is, Democrats in office are usually noticeable for their jellyfishesque posture (caused by a lack of spine).
Recently, New York Democrats stood up. New York has a very good chance to be the first state that passes marriage equality through the legislature instead of through the courts. Unfortunately, three George W. Bush Democrats were using a legislative technicality to stand in the way of marriage equality. These Bushocrats basically told the NY State Senate "oppose gay marriage, or we will throw control of the Senate to the Republicans." The Dems in power waffled, and, for awhile, it looked like a classic case of justice caving to power. Then Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith issued a statement that Harry Reid should memorize: "I will not be the leader to sacrifice what is right for New York for a quick political solution."
