During his speech in front of the boisterous crowd, Sanders said he is confident that if he wins the California primary Tuesday, he will win the presidential nomination despite the fact that Clinton currently holds the sweeping majority of votes from Democratic superdelegates.

Sanders' campaign said the crowd numbered 5,804.

Sanders called for investment in rural areas and inner cities, as opposed to Afghanistan, as well as the need for equal representation of people in the LGBT community and Native Americans, for African-American people and Latinos and Latinas. He stood by women's rights to equal pay and abortion.

"Women want the whole damn dollar and they're right," he said.

He also called for a $15 minimum wage, which California has pledged to enact. He declared health care a human right and shared his plans to increase Social Security benefits, which he told the crowd that President Barack Obama supports as well.

Candidates should be able to run a campaign without big-money interests controlling them, Sanders said.

"The current campaign finance system is corrupt and undermining American democracy," he said. "It is time for us to tell corporate America that they are no longer going to get it all."
Sanders says he owes his constant drive to young people, who understand the vision of the United States to be one of social justice, racial justice and environmental justice.

Bernie Fires Up A Big Crowd In Davis

Bernie Sanders, traipsing across far-flung regions of California as he seeks a comeback victory here next week, swatted at likely Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for minimizing the state’s water shortage and the effects of climate change.

“The people of California perceive that there was a drought here, and Donald has come to tell you that you’re wrong,” Sanders said. “You thought there was a drought, but Donald, who has studied this issue intensely for decades, has reached the conclusion there is no drought.”

Speaking to a crowd of more than 9,000 on the campus of UC Davis, Sanders sounded familiar themes about income inequality, broken criminal justice and campaign finance systems, the predatory nature of student loans and the need for universal health care and expanded Social Security.

“We have built jails, not colleges,” he said. “It’s time to reverse that trend.”

At a Friday rally in Fresno, Trump declared, “There is no drought.” Part of the reason for the lack of water, particularly in the Central Valley, he said, is the state prioritizing the needs of the Delta smelt over farmers.

Sanders, continuing with his playful knock on Trump as “one of the great meteorologists in the world,” noted that the New York businessman has previously said that climate change is a hoax.

“What the scientists ... tell us is if we do not get our act together in a very short period of time, if we do not boldly transform our energy system away from fossil fuel to energy efficiency and sustainable energy, the current problems will become much, much worse,” Sanders said.

Sanders Speaks To More Than 7k In Monterey

Traffic stopped, foot traffic snarled, and lengthy queues of people jammed the sidewalks in downtown Monterey. Bernie Sanders was in town.

The Democratic presidential candidate’s visit to Monterey on Tuesday night attracted a crowd of 7,800, many of them supporters.

In his Monterey speech, Sanders addressed a wide spectrum of platforms from the economy, jobs, climate change, healthcare, fracking, the working class, immigrants, working mothers, gay marriage, healthcare and voiced his support for ethnic groups including Latinos, African Americans and Native Americans.

But the core of the Sanders’ speech was clear. In zeroing in on key platforms, he stressed that he’s running a campaign that is anti-establishment. He has chosen to steer clear of support from Wall Street, big pharma and large corporations.

“The establishment has betrayed the American people, and now is the time for real change,” said Sanders. “Our job is to create an economy that works for all of us, not just the 1 percent, an economy that works for the middle class, the children, the elderly and for the poor. That is our economy.”

Change was a repeated if not pivotal theme in his speech. His campaign he said has united people “to fight for real change in this country.”

Within the theme of change, “we need a political party and movement of millions of working people and young people who are actively involved. We should not be taking money from Wall Street we should be taking Wall Street on.”

Sanders Barnstorms The Bay Area

On Memorial Day, Sanders led a procession of veterans during an unannounced stop at the former Presidio military base in San Francisco before crossing the Bay Bridge for a pair of scheduled events in neighboring Oakland. There, he first spoke at Allen Temple Baptist Church, focusing on economic, racial and educational inequality before heading to Frank Ogawa Plaza—known among local activists as Oscar Grant Plaza—to address a large and energized crowd gathered in front of City Hall. He even made a surprise halftime appearance at Game 7 of the NBA Western Conference Finals as the Golden State Warriors advanced to the championship round for the second straight season.

At the City Hall rally, Sanders was introduced by University of California, Berkeley economist and former Clinton administration labor secretary Robert Reich, who lauded Bernie’s “courage to stand up to the establishment” and said he agreed with the candidate’s assessment that the current “concentration of income, wealth and political power is undermining our economy and eroding our democracy.”

Sanders said that concentration of power has led to a situation in which America “can invest trillions of dollars fighting a war in Iraq we should have never gotten into” while “we don’t have the funds to rebuild our crumbling cities.”

“No to more wars,” thundered Sanders to roaring applause. “No to more tax breaks for millionaires and corporations. Yes to investing in depressed inner cities and poverty-stricken rural communities!”

“I’ve been to Flint and talked to parents whose children’s water was poisoned by lead,” said Sanders. “I’ve been to Detroit, where the public school system is on the verge of collapse. I’ve been to Baltimore, where tens of thousands of people are addicted to heroin and can’t get treatment.”

Around 20,000 people lined up for many blocks to hear the 74-year-old democratic socialist speak. This Digital Journalist was there and interviewed numerous Sanders supporters.

“I have an immune disorder and am willing to be ill in this sun and heat to see this wonderful man speak,” said 57-year-old artist Carey Caccavo Wheaton, who traveled 60 miles from Sebastopol to volunteer at the event. “I love Bernie because he truly cares about all of us; he’s a true FDR Democrat with the values this country needs to recover from its ills—vast income inequality, corruption in our elections, a lack of caring for ordinary citizens, worship of money and power and a corrupt media that won’t even fairly represent an election.” It was a refrain heard over and over again—that Bernie just cares more than any other candidate about ordinary people.

Sanders Welcomes Fresno To The Revolution

“Fresno,” the Vermont senator said just before 8 p.m., “welcome to the political revolution.”

At Sunday’s event at the Fresno Fairgrounds, the crowd chanted “Bernie” as he walked to the podium at the Paul Paul Theater, which was set up for 5,000 people and was vastly overwhelmed. So many people showed up that the gates had to be closed, leaving a large crowd to listen on loudspeakers outside the theater.

He began his speech, which ran more than an hour, by recounting his campaign’s long odds.

“When we started, people said ‘oh, he’s not going to win any states,’ ” Sanders said. “Well, we’ve won 20.”

He added that he expected to win California – “and we’re going to win it big.”

“I came to see the person who has encapsulated everything that I’ve always wanted for this country,” said Eva Mendoza of Orange Cove. Mendoza said she gave “no second thought” to driving 45 miles and waiting in the high-90s heat.

“It was one small sacrifice on my part to see someone who can help change the country for the better.”

Olivia Haagenson sat near the stage wearing overalls adorned with political pins that read “Pro child, pro choice,” “Fresno Democrats” and “burn one for Bernie.”

“I finally feel like a politician represents what we (young people) want,” she said. “Hillary and Obama came close, but he really gets it. And that’s pretty tight because he is almost 80, and he still gets it.”

7,500 Hear Sanders Speak In Santa Maria

Bernie Sanders is ready to fight for California — or at least the Golden State’s wealth of delegates.

The Democratic presidential candidate came out swinging during a Saturday stop in Santa Maria, where more than 7,500 people rallied at Ralph Baldiviez Stadium to hear him speak. Sanders, a Vermont senator, was greeted by a mix of people, from middle-schoolers to seniors. Many wore T-shirts and accessories emblazoned with “Feel the Bern,” Sanders’ unofficial campaign slogan, or phrases disparaging Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.

“It looks to me like all of you in Santa Maria are ready for a political revolution!” Sanders yelled to a cheering crowd at the start of his speech.
He stuck close to his typical stump speech and focused primarily on a few key themes: economic equality, cheapereducation, universal healthcare and alternative energy sources.

He encouraged large corporations, such as Wal-Mart, to pay workers fair wages so that employees don’t need to resort to food stamps and other public aid. Providing young people with jobs and opportunities for education is key to keeping them out of trouble and reducing the prison population, Sanders said.

“The truth is, 45 years ago here in California, and in states all over the country, tuition at your universities was virtually free,” Sanders said. “Well, if we could provide virtually free tuition to the state universities 45 years ago, we damn well can do it today.”

Sanders said the federal government could help Californians manage the drought by pushing for “sensible water conservation practices” and helping in any way possible. Drought is a byproduct of global warming, Sanders said, so the most important way the federal government can address the problem is by being “aggressive” in phasing out fossil fuels and pushing for alternative energy sources.

“We have got to acknowledge that climate change is already doing devastating problems in this country and around the world,” he said. “You’re already on the cutting edge of that. Some parts of this country don’t perceive that.”

Trump Backs Out Of A Chance To Help A Charity

Donald Trump on Friday said he would not debate Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders because it would be "inappropriate" to square off against the candidate who currently trails Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary fight.

"Based on the fact that the Democratic nominating process is totally rigged and Crooked Hillary Clinton and (Debbie) Wasserman-Schultz will not allow Bernie Sanders to win, and now that I am the presumptive Republican nominee, it seems inappropriate that I would debate the second-place finisher," Trump said in a statement.

The two populist candidates had floated the idea of debating each other throughout the week. Sanders has been trying to debate Clinton ahead of the California primary on June 7, but she, too, declined.

Speaking to reporters in Los Angeles, Sanders said he was disappointed that Trump changed his mind.

"I hope that he changes his mind again. Mr. Trump is known to change his mind many times in a day," Sanders said. "Trump is a bully, he's a big tough guy. Well, I say to Mr. Trump, what are you afraid of?"

Trump's announcement on Friday is a far cry from a statement he made the day before, when he told supporters in Bismark, North Dakota, that he'd "love to debate Bernie."

"He's a dream," the real estate magnate said. "If we can raise for maybe women's health issues or something. If we can raise $10 or $15 million for charity, which would be a very appropriate amount."

10,000 Show Up For Sanders In Ventura

Calling California the "most important primary in the whole nominating process," Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders asked voters to turn out on June 7 and help him secure the state's 475 delegates and use that momentum to clinch his party's nomination.

"When voter turnout is high...we win," he said.

Sanders spoke Thursday at Ventura College, one of several Southern California stops the Vermont senator is making this week as he seeks to upset frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

College officials said 9,856 people turned out to see Sanders, many of them lining up several hours before his midday appearance. But before he got into the meat of the speech, Sanders made an announcement about Republican candidate Donald Trump, who secured the delegates he needed this week.

"It appears that Donald Trump is prepared to debate," Sanders said, to wild approval.

Sanders' speech also included the need to pass immigration reform.

He had seen firsthand in Florida's tomato fields what happens to some immigrants who are in the country illegally.

"Undocumented workers are being exploited terribly, and they need legal protection," he said. "That is why I believe we need to pass comprehensive immigration reform and a path toward citizenship and provide legal rights to people as soon as possible."

Bernie Rallies Revolutionaries In Cathedral City

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders urged a raucous Cathedral City crowd Wednesday to "stand up to the status quo" and be part of a "political revolution."

More than 1,000 supporters lined up outside the Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City, with some of them camping outside the ballfield through the night, for a chance to see Sanders at the free rally themed "A Future to Believe In."

Sanders took the stage at noon, telling the crowd "the theme of this campaign is the political revolution and, guess what, you are the revolutionaries."

Other topics Sanders covered included universal healthcare, which he said should be a guaranteed right for all Americans, and combating climate change, which he called a "moral responsibility" for all people to undertake.

Sanders scoffed at denials that climate change is a manmade phenomenon that threatens the planet, saying, "It saddens me that the Republican Party, with very few exceptions, is so beholden to the fossil fuel industry that they don't have the guts to acknowledge reality."

As he concluded his nearly hour-long speech, he again called on his supporters to turn out en masse for the June 7 primary, noting that 475 delegates are at stake.

"If we have a large voter turnout, we are going to win the California primary," Sanders told the crowd. "Let this great state, one of the most progressive states in America, tell the world that you are ready for the political revolution."

Sanders Takes Aim At "The Happiest Place On Earth"

Outside this city's downtown convention center, the usual crop of vacationing families were boarding theme park shuttles, sporting Mickey Mouse ears or Star Wars backpacks. Inside, Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) was denouncing the Walt Disney Co. as an example of the economic greed and media control that had exploded America's wealth gap.
"Everybody knows that the major economic force here in Anaheim is the Disney corporation," Sanders said. "Anybody here work for Disney? Anybody make a living wage, working for Disney?"

There were cheers for the first question, and loud boos for the second.

"I'm probably the only politician to go to Anaheim and say this," Sanders said. "I use Disney not just to pick on Disney, but as an example of what people are talking about when they talk about a rigged economy. Here in Anaheim, and the surrounding areas, Disney pays its workers wages that are so low that many of them are forced to live in motels because they can't afford a decent place to live. Meanwhile, Disney made a record-breaking profit of nearly $3 billion last quarter. At the other side of the world, in Florida, Disney replaced 250 workers with foreign workers using the H1-B visa program. They had tech workers train the people that were replacing them!"

It was a rare political reference to the ongoing lawsuit against Disney over its hiring of consulting companies that cut costs by hiring foreign workers. Sanders went on to criticize the company for "exploiting people in China" and called Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger a member of "the top tenth of one percent," proof of "an economy based on greed," making $46 million in the year that the layoffs occurred.

"Let me tell you things that will not appear on ABC [News]," Sanders said. "You know why they won't appear on ABC? Who owns ABC?"

The crowd cried out "Disney!"

"So, you know about these things," Sanders continued. "I think it would be very nice of the Disney corporation to start building factories in the United States. That will not appear on ABC tonight."

Bernie Speaks In East L.A.

Bernie Sanders swooped onto a crowed-filled East Los Angeles baseball field in Lincoln Park Monday, where he made his usual pitch for free college tuition, hit hard at his critics and assailed joblessness and corporate greed.

“A great nation is not judged by the number of billionaires it has or the number of nuclear weapons it has,” Sanders said. “It is judged by how it treats the weakest and most vulnerable among us.”

The Vermont senator has been hopscotching across Southern California over the past few days, adding rallies the way a musician might keep adding concert dates - National City, Vista, Irvine - Monday morning in East Los Angeles, then hours later in Santa Monica Sanders has been canvassing California ahead of the June 7 primary.

He’ll get to San Bernardino, Riverside and Anaheim on Tuesday.

The nearly hour-long speech before a crowd of about 2,000 started with a bold prediction and a plan.

“We are going to win the state of California,” he said. “And we are going to win the state of California because by the end of this campaign, we are going to have rallies all over this state and speak personally in a grassroots way to over 200,000 people in California.”

He said he estimated that 5 million people would be voting in the Democratic primary and that he’ll need at least 2.5 million voters to cast ballots for him. The 200,000 direct contacts through rallies, he said, is an “unprecedented” effort in California primary politics.

Bernie Talks To A Big Crowd In Vista, CA

As he battles for a primary win in California, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders told cheering supporters in Vista on Sunday that he can beat Donald Trump — “and beat him badly” — in a head-to-head matchup in November.

It was a message not just to voters in the Golden State.

“I say to every Democrat in this country and those delegates who are going to the convention in Philadelphia, if you want the strongest candidate to make sure that Donald Trump does not become president, we are that campaign,” Sanders said during a rally at Rancho Buena Vista High School.

The Vermont senator pointed to a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll that showed him 15 points ahead of the billionaire and presumed Republican nominee. The same poll had Democratic rival Hillary Clinton besting Trump by three points.

Sanders’ roughly hourlong speech, before an estimated crowd of 7,250, covered familiar stump-speech ground: He railed against Wall Street, called for universal health care and free college education and raising the national minimum wage to $15 an hour.

Supporters cheered him throughout the address, occasionally breaking into chants of “Bernie, Bernie.” One big crowd pleaser on the sunny day came when Sanders put on a Rancho Buena Vista High School baseball cap midway through the event.

Lucas Factor, 37, of Poway said Sanders’ ideas “hit home with every American household.”

“He inspires me,” Factor said. “I agree with a lot of what he believes in, helping out the less fortunate. He represents the 99 percent.”
